View Full Version : CD32 games that work properly
Ian

OK, this is just an idea of mine to save some of you some time downloading something that doesn't work with the new WinUAE or has problems.
I plan to add games as I test them, and other's could do the same:)
I'm going through my collection in alphabetical order and the first is Akira and I'm sorry to say it works
I won't bother with pictures, you'll just have to take my word for it:)
stainy
24 February 2002, 21:26
SillyPutty, Brutal Football and DOTC2 work so far :)
well for me anyway
RetroMan
24 February 2002, 21:28
Well I would like to test too, but WinUAE crashes everytime I try to set up a CD³² :( It just freezes, without showing anything than a black screen !
Ian
24 February 2002, 21:36
Try turning off immediate blit's (If you have it enabled) I sometimes get a VC runtime error with that enabled. I'll post my config if you want:)
Sod it I'll post it anyway, remember to change your rom locations though:)
let me know if it yields positive results;)
Ian
24 February 2002, 21:40
Stainy (And anyone else who adds to the list), I hope you don't mind, but when I have time I'm going to delete your post's and make the list an easy to read alphabetical list:)
Credit will be given though, to the testee;)
Alien Breed 3D Doesn't Work

good idea Ian:D

Alien Breed SE
Works as well as the floppy version:)
But has a problem with the computer's where you buy gun's and stuff. This might actually be in the floppy version, but I don't remember it so here goes:
When you walk into the computer you automatically log in, this cause's a few problems when you exit (Log off) the computers as you just log straigt back in again:rolleyes
You can get out of it though, hold down while logging out and after a couple of times of being logged back on, you'll eventually be far enough away to not log in again.
Qwak
Work's
I haven't played this game much but as far as I can see it works without any problems.
It's on the same CD/iso as Alien Breed SE anyway, so no extra downloading for this game:)

Alien Breed Tower Assualt
Doesn't work
Very strange this one, sometimes it work's to the intro sometimes it doesn't, don't know why, but here are my thought's on whats happening:
Seems to depend on CPU speed, if you set it to A500 speed it boot's past the CD32 spinny logo thing and sometimes start's the intro some times it generates a runtime error?
Maybe this is because of my system, someone else should test this if they have it:)
If you select fastest possible CPU speed, it reset's (with a flash of red, probably a guru error??) after the CD32 logo begins to spin off the screen.
Alien Breed 2
Doesn't work
Same problems as above. Can't get anything to work with this one:sad
Ian
24 February 2002, 22:41
Works
Infact this version is better than the floppy version, guess those extra buttons really come into play and make this more enjoyable to play than the floppy version.
If you like this game, this is the best version:)
Ian
24 February 2002, 22:49
Works
Works well, no problem's other than no music plays, but this may be because the version I have has seperate MP3 files for the music track's.
There are a couple of demo's on this disk too, a Super Stardust rolling demo, which works fine with sound and Superfrog, which does work, but the frog always seems to be jumping even when your not touching the joypad/stick, maybe a bug for Toni to look at, there is no sound in the demo either.
Ian
24 February 2002, 22:54
Works
Same problem as Arcade Pool though, no music and again this could be because Daemon tools doesn't mount mp3 files with iso's properly, when I have time I'll burn it to a cd and check if I'm right:)
But for know, back to more testing:)
Ian
24 February 2002, 22:58
Doesn't work
Similar problems to the Alien Breed Tower Assualt disk, reset's after the CD32 logo screen and appears to just hang in A500 speed mode.
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:01
Doesn't work
Game load's fine, but when it begins to load a level it reset's back to the (Now familiar;)) CD32 logo screen
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:11
Works
But for the life of me, I can't play a bloody match in it, probably just because I don't know what button's to press to set the thing in motion:rolleyes
Stainy say's he's got it working so ask him what to press because I can't get past the control select screen (Where you select between novice etc etc)
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:16
Works
No sound though, game plays fine:)
Edit: Scratch that sound DOES work, I have found out why it wasn't working and will pass on this information when Toni has looked into it:)
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:23
Works
Again no sound (Begining to think it's an old problem WinUAE used to have when it crashed, I will test these game again later), but the game plays fine.
I'm begining to notice problems with the mapped controls, sometimes they work on my joypad and sometimes they work on the keyboard and sometimes neither work at all.
Toni, am I right in thinking that it should work on both the joypad and numeric pad??
Edit: Sound also work's in this game now:rolleyes (Now that I know what's wrong;))
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:27
Works
There goes my theory about the sound bug, it's working again, and so is Cannon Fodder, seem's as though Toni ironed out the problems with this game.:great
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:30
Works
Sound and game both fine, although I needed to set the sound buffer to 5 or 6 to avoid choppy sound:)
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:40
doesn't Work
Game appears to be loading, but after a short while it starts to flash colours over the screen, much like when programs had been compressed with powerpacker/turbo imploder.
Sorry I can't be much more help than that:)
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:43
Works
Game plays fine, infact better than the floppy version again:) Again it's those extra buttons meaning that up doesn't jump, which with my joypad is a god send.
Sound doesn't work though.
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:45
Works
Again no sound, but the actual game works fine:)
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:48
Works
Perfect sound and gameplay, who could ask for more:)
Extra buttons help as well (Again;))
Ian
24 February 2002, 23:59
Diggers
Works
Same sound problems as Oscar (Yes I wrote that one first;)), first time I played the game fine, second (when I just tested it) I got a run time error after selecting the mouse as the controller. After testing it again it worked fine, guess it an intermitent problem.
Oscar
Works
Strange problems here (Strange to me anyway;)) CD music plays fine, but no in game SFX work or music that isn't on the CD, game works as well as I remember from my real CD32 anyway:)
Dizzy - The Big Six
I forgot I had this and I ain't messing up my alphabetical order for no-one;)
Works
No sound, probably because of the MP3 files not being loaded properly by daemon tools again.
Game works fine:)
Ian
25 February 2002, 00:02
Doesn't Work
And I wasn't expecting it to, it's a beta version for pete's sake;)
Intro works though, shame this game was never finished:sad
Ian

That's my entire collection of iso's, I hope this list is of some use to some of you, I hope it helps Toni a great deal, perfect emulation is something we're all looking for:)
@ Toni, if you want my finding's in more detail on certain games don't hestitate to ask:)
I can draw the conclusion that this is the best CD32 emu around, and will get better as soon as these sound issues are ironed out.
I haven't got a clue what might be causing these sound problem's, but hopefully with this list someone will be able to find out:)
Around 60 games tested, over 90% of the are playable, not bad for a first release eh;)
Great work Toni:)
BTW I have decided not to change all this now, if you test a game I shall add it into the correct place by editing my previous post's, it'd take far to long to do another list;)
Please add your tested games, I have no more so it's over to you guys:D

I notice you referred to the mp3's - how are you using mp3's anyhow? I thought CD audio was CDDA format. Shouldn't those be in CDDA format in order to work proper?
Do any of the [no sound] flagged games you tested use real CDDA tracks?
Toni Wilen
25 February 2002, 09:23
Ian, your sound problems are very odd. CD32 has no special audio hardware that could cause your sound problems. Do you also have identical sound problems with normal OCS/AGA games?
Missing CDA tracks can't cause missing sound effects and non CDA music.
andreas
25 February 2002, 09:34
I notice you referred to the mp3's - how are you using mp3's anyhow?
Well, I have to ask this too.
I didn't get around with mp3s either so far...I assume that I MUST burn the ISO + MP3 files to CD to get sound from MP3 files at all, aren't I right?
CD32 ROM + CD32 extended ROM + DaemonTools + ISO + WinUAE with "Hard drive" set as CD0: works fantastic now, but without MP3 sound, though...
Toni Wilen
25 February 2002, 11:02
WinUAE with "Hard drive" set as CD0:
This is not needed for CD32 emulation (and it may even cause some problems)
Also don't enable "Add PC drives"

You need to either burn iso+mp3's to cdr/cdrw (for example with fireburner) or find software that can convert iso+mp3's to bin/cue image format. I haven't found any, unfortunately..

Do you have Windows 95/98/ME? If yes, you probably need to download ASPI driver update from Adaptec, see readme.txt that comes with WinUAE for URL.

This is not needed for CD32 emulation (and it may even cause some problems)
Also don't enable "Add PC drives"
Bloody hell!! :eek :shocked
This is witchcraft :p
You have just got me flabbergasted with mouth open. :eek
I don't know how this works, but this thing recognizes my virtual CD drive even without having to add it in Harddrive settings! Holy God...Cool as hell, really.
Did you have to include special support for DaemonTools to get this to work or how did you realize it apart from that? I can hardly believe this works without special code that has been meticulously adapted in order to match with each of those CD-ROM emulators around...

25 February 2002, 15:57

There is NOTHING in common between harddrive emulation and CD32 CDROM emulation.
In CD32 mode WinUAE just scans all CDROM drives and autoselects first non-empty drive. There is no need for special code, Daemon Tools' virtual drive looks like real SCSI CDROM from software point of view.

Ohhh...if I'm not completely wrong, this can cause problems.
Think about this setup a user might have (NOT mine, though):
CD-ROM: Letter G:
CD inserted
CD recorder: Letter H:
No CD inserted
Virtual CD-ROM: Letter I:
According to your logic, this would make WinUAE look for the CD recorder with letter H: because it's the first non-empty drive.
What WinUAE needs to look for here is the drive with the letter I, though.

I guess there needs to be a choice then because there could equally well be a real CD32 disk in the drive G ;).

Toni: Having trouble with the SCSI CD auto-detection. I have 3 drives, only seems to work with cd0 mapped to z: (my chosen drive). Any chance of a "preferred drive" option in the future?
Back to on-topic, here are a few games have tested (original CDs) * but don't take the failure as fact until I get the above problem fixed.
Update March 1st: Games retested! Note that suggestion to use 1 floppy was enabled (and may be required) for sound.
- Battle Chess Works. With sound. Screams make chess fun. :)
- Kang Fu Doesn't Works. Requires floppies disabled, get out of memory error.
- Legends Works. With sound + CD audio.
- Liberation Works. With sound + CD audio.
- Litil Divil Works. With sound + CD audio.
- Marvin's Marvellous Adventure Doesn't Work. Controller problem on menu. With sound + CD audio.

Well, perhaps I should elaborate a bit, my hardware configuration may be a little unusual!
I have 3 IDE hard drives, relics of past computers. ;-) Anyway, to cut a long story short I have them partitioned a lot, taking up letters C - M with each assigned for work, windows etc. (100 gig total)
What turns out to be a wise decision considering my hard drives, I have 3 SCSI CD devices (CD, DVD, CD-R) on a SCSI bus, letters X - Z. :rolleyes
Now, ideally I could tell WinUAE to try my preferred CD drive, but I have to tell it explicitely. I don't know, maybe the time to search is proportional to the number of drives so would take a while to work to Z! Anyway, I don't notice any activity unless I map cd0 to Z:, and as Toni says this more than likely breaks a few games. :sad

- Liberation Doesn't Work. Hangs on title screen
Turn JIT off. Liberation (and some other games too) don't like too fast CPU..

Yes, GUI option for drive selection will be implemented in future releases. But unfortunately it is not possible to know drive letter <> scsi id mapping with ASPI (this is only possible in Windows 2K/XP because they support "better" direct scsi api called SPTI) This means I have to write two drive selection styles, another that asks scsi ids and device names (like in CDRWin) and another that asks for drive letters.

11 partitions in 100G, I think this is really too much... I have 160G of HD space (2x80G) and I only have 4 partitions (4x40G)
BTW: Always remember to report your operation system if you have CD32/uaescsi.device problems! (95/98/ME uses ASPI and 2K/XP uses SPTI, ASPI and SPTI are different SCSI programming APIs. SPTI is MS supported, but only works in 2K/XP)

Hmmm...
I mounted my virtual cd-drive (deamon tools) and mapped it to Z:
But WinUAE doesn't recognize the CD (ISO). The nice CD32 animation shows up, but the CD doesn't run. I can't map the drive to F, E etc because I've got many network dirs mapped to those (automatically setted up by our system admin at work).

Has been solved, if you ignore the what the readme says about floppy emulation and enable the floppies, all ingame sounds should be heard:)
If a game doesn't work with floppies enabled disable them, this could help the game to load, but you probably won't get sound though.
I have tested and tested this and it IS what's wrong with it;)

It works now, I tried it with Alfred Chicken, sound works too.
I remapped my network drive F:
I gave it the letter G:
And now I gave my virtual drive the volume F:
Sadly though every time I turn on my pc at work, this network drive will be F again.
Oh well, I can live with that for a while....
Great work Toni!

I now have the configuration set with no hard drive mapping, uaescsi.device enabled, no JIT (since I'm using 68EC020), and no floppies. I'm running XP. Rather surprisingly, I've had some success booting without a hard drive mapping. CD audio seems to be absent, period :(. Here's part of the log...
Windows NT/2K/XP: Using SPTI CDROM interface
Don't care mouse mode set
PAL mode, 50Hz
Need to init_row_map
Byte put to custom register.
B-Trap f201 at f80cac (02450CCC)
Filesystem: mapped memory @$e90000.
Card 1 (ZorroII) done.
scsi error: 0, lasterror=6
Anyway, a few more games (re) tested...
Update March 1st: Ignore the following, these still need retesting unlike those above!
- Banshee Works. Same result as Ian, don't believe CD audio works.
- Guardian Doesn't Work. Doesn't boot, but the log shows as much as Banshee that does work.
- James Pond 2 Works. With sound. Very slow @26 FPS on my P3 733.
- Jet Strike Doesn't Work. Get's to play / manual menu and then hangs.
- Liberation Doesn't Work. Seriously, I'm pressing every button and can't get past the screen with the man being carried by droids. JIT is disabled.
- Syndicate Doesn't Work. Same result as Ian.
I'll edit my previous post as and when I have a chance to test them again.

I've got it all fixed now, have the virtual CD-rom drive permanently set to F:
Now I can test about 60 iso's!

uaescsi.device enabled
This isn't needed, either... CD audio support is more compatible if you don't enable uaescsi.device and use Windows 2000 or XP. (I think I'll have to write better CD32 instructions soon...)
Liberation problems: Do you have full CD or image with CD audio tracks? Because Liberation also needs CDA tracks!
Easy CD audio testing: insert audio cd and boot CD32. CD32 build-in CDA player appears. Everything should work except fast forward/rewind (not yet supported)
Riempie: Argh, IOCTL-mode (=more compatible with CDA) CDROM drive detection code is buggy :(
Difference between IOCTL and SPTI: with SPTI WinUAE sends SCSI commands directly to drive, with IOCTL WinUAE sends simple commands to device driver (for example: "Play Audio from x to y", "Pause Audio" etc..) If you enable uaescsi.device, SCSI commands must be supported which means WinUAE can't use IOCTL and falls back to SPTI.
Missing sound: more debugging needed...

I'm really trying to follow a standard configuration but it really isn't working at all well for me! The only reason I'm straying from the suggested configuration is because of the following observations:
- Without uaescsi.device I get nowhere. From log:
Windows NT/2K/XP: Using IOCTL CDROM interface
failed to open cd-rom handle (\\.\)
CreateFile: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
Don't care mouse mode set
PAL mode, 50Hz
Need to init_row_map
Byte put to custom register.

Filesystem: mapped memory @$e90000.
Card 1 (ZorroII) done.
warning: Program does not wait for blitter
Failed attempt to mount device
- Without a hard drive mapping I get no CD32 boot logo, although games tend to boot and work. This seems very strange behaviour, possibly a failure to recognise a CD device at boot in the ROM (but wouldn't explain why it'd work with uaescsi.device). Hence I can't test CD audio, but I do try! Note that I'm not going to test CD audio with the hard drive mapping (when I get the boot logo) since this is straying somewhat from a solution.

- It's the full, totally original, 1993 pressed CD. As you say, it requires CD audio and therefore I think it's obvious there's a strong link between this game not working, general CD audio problems, and the IO mechanism used. Since the uaescsi.device "works" (as you say, raw SCSI commands), I can only assume that the IOCTL support is the issue here, causing all of my problems (*well, it's unrelated to normal audio issues).
Sorry for having such an annoying config! Hope this helps though. If you need any more information, let me know.

I have gotten to the bottom of this one too for those interested:)
Use the config file on the first page, but delete the NV ram bit so it's blank and also set your cpu speed to match A500 speed.
Once you have done that the game(s) will work:D
More fixes soon ...... probably;)

I can confirm Sane's post about Simon the Sorceror... No sound with floppies disabled and I do have sound with floppies enabled... Weird...
I also tried Kick Chaos CD32.. It works with Audio Tracks! and I tried Benefactor CD32; also works perfectly with Audio Tracks!
I haven't used Deamen Tools, just inserted the cd-rom in my drive... When I put the CD's (Kid Chaos & Benefactor) in my Plextor CD Burner (F:) I don't hear Audio Tracks and when I put the same cd's using the same config in Creative PC-DVD Player (E:) I do hear Audio Tracks...
Just letting you know...

Hey MrDig :)
maybe it`s because you got an audio cable hooked up to your dvd drive and not your Plextor cd writer :)

You know, I actually removed my cable the other day when sorting out sound card "issues" and never put it back. However, I only use it because my Plextor CD reader doesn't seem to like digital audio under XP. However, Plextor CD recorders appear to work well as do Pioneer DVD drives but make sure that little box is ticked!

Hey Stainy!
I actually didn't even think about that.. I will check it out.. :)
Tried some other games:
Fly Harder - works great
Furry of the Furries - works great
Roadkill - works (some sound problems, but due to my slow cpu 500mhz me think...)
Super Stardust - works great but when I've finished one level the game refuses to continue no matter which button I press! Does some else encountered this problem?
This error also occured with Benefactor... After finishing the first level the game 'hangs'...
Death Mask - works great..
Flink - works

Hmm... Tried Fury of the Furries too, works great, except after I've finished level 1 and want to start level 2, the emulated CD32 (WinUAE) resets itself. Seems like more games seem to crash/reset/whatever after the first level. Strange...
Maybe this has something to do with the NVRAM? Because I know Fury of the Furries automatically saves resume points. I've checked the NVRAM editor and no save stuff of Fury, but I know it should be there.
I know an NVRAM file can be set in the config tab of WinUAE, but what should I select? Can I make such a file myself? How does this work?
Ian

It creates it's own, just click on the side of the NVRam bit on the rom section of your config, type in any filename you want to use and click on save:)
Bob's your uncle, you now have yourself a NVRam file;)

Toni: Just to let you know that a suggestion made elsewhere regarding the CD drive letter "gap issue" has resolved my problems, at least with the Liberation CD I tested. Update: After retesting a whole load more, I have been very successful!
MrDig: Your sound problems for Roadkill sound like your CPU speed (I can only squeeze 48 fps out of most games on my P3 733). As for Super Stardust, you should change to the next level using the left / right buttons and then it should work!
(Group): Please note the changes made to my compatibility notes above. There are still some that still need testing (and I have a stack more new ones too!)

Problem with missing audio if all floppy drives were disabled is finally solved. It was caused by a bug in custom chipset reset code. (there is custom chipset register that contains misc floppy and audio bits, Kickstart's floppy driver resets it only if there are one or more enabled floppy drives)
SuperFrog button problem is also fixed.

I just wanted to say that Labyrinth of Time is fully playable in WinUAE (using Ian's config). I completed it the other day (and expected a better ending to it). Sound was ok, but sometimes crackly, saving to NVRAM worked fine. Ran it from an .iso mounted in Daemon's Tools 3.00. Used the mouse to play the game (can anyone tell me the key mappings for the CD32 joypad, I guess most of them are on the number pad?)

- Joypad (keys: /=RWD *=PLAY -=FFW 7=Green 9=Yellow 1=Red 3=Blue, hardcoded, no configuration yet)
Also mapped to PC joystick/joypad buttons 1-7

Hi Ian,
found a working ISO of Chuck Rock CD32, and I just upped in the zone! Sound works like a dream! :bounce
It's slow as hell, though. And when Chuck moves to the right, the screen jumps. Reminds me of the behaviour WinUAE 0.8.8 R8 showed if you ran Chaos Engine on it. Immediate blits on/off and Fast Copper on/off do NOT change the situation in this case.
The ISO is 56 MB in size, but if you zip it it's merely 1.3 MB! :D
One of the few CD32 games I can upload in the zone, methinks. :)
Enjoy!

Hi. Im running a machine using nvidia gforce4 128 mb grahpics card and an amd 1.6GH processor.
Ive managed to emulate the cd32 on winuae. Most of my games work fine. The game i have problems with is Pirates Gold. The sound and graphics are very scracthy and when i play the game the animation is faster then the real thing. To me it seems the emulator is working too fast and the game cant keep up with it. So how do i slow down the emulator so i can get rid of the scratchy stuff.
Believe me ive tried everything i can think of. Please Help:bowdown :nuts :banghead :crying :guru :help
