View Full Version : EAB Games League Season 1 Round 10 - Lotus 3

The final lap of the season is underway...
Lotus 3
The rules for this competition are in this thread (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=29731). Here's a quick run-down though:
- The round starts at 12:00am UK time on Monday, November 26, and finishes at 11:59pm UK time on Saturday, December 15.
- Scores can only be posted during the time of the round, any scores posted outside of this period won't count.
- You can play on a real Amiga or an emulator, WHDLoad or not, whatever you prefer.
- If you can, take screenshots or use a digital camera/mobile phone to provide proof of your score, however if you are unable to do this then you can upload your high-score file as confirmation. You should also write your score in your post.
- Anyone can enter at any time, and you can post as many scores as you want during the round. Of course, only your highest score will count towards the final standings.
- At the end of the round, the player with the highest score gets 12 points, 2nd place gets 10, 3rd 8, 4th 7, 5th 6, 6th 5, 7th 4, 8th 3, 9th 2 and 10th 1 (assuming that many people take part).
- No cheating! No using save states, cheat codes, trainers or anything like that, and no modifying scores in any way. This competition is just a bit of fun and hopefully no-one will sink that low. However, if you genuinely suspect someone has cheated in any way, please PM me and I'll look into it. If I find someone guilty of cheating, they will be banned for the first leg of the EAB/Lemon Super League next year.
READ THIS CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU START
- "Against the clock" mode must be played. And also, Easy, Medium and Hard modes will all be played and the scores of all three will be added up to make the total. You can use any car you like.
I think that's it. If you have any questions, you can either post them in this thread, the General Discussion thread or the Rules thread. Thanks and have fun!
Final Scores:

Can someone please put Lotus 3 WHDload 100% version in the zone?
Graham Humphrey

Done (taken from www.whdownload.com (http://www.whdownload.com)).
turrican3
25 November 2007, 21:53
graham can you confirm than i can use the cd32 version ?
I think yes because the cd32 version contain the lotus3 adf, there is no difference between the versions just the cd32 version use cdda that's all.
Graham Humphrey
25 November 2007, 21:55
If it's exactly the same game then yes.
Do you mean Lotus Trilogy? I've got that installed on my A1200 and it seems to be the same, but if anyone knows any differently...

yes lotus trilogy with cdda. :great

I still remember saving up all my pocket money for this. Loved the intro. Original is still the best, but this is very good too.

25 November 2007, 22:39
I just wasted the last 1.5 hours of my life trying to get Lotus Trilogy AGA HD to run on my A1200 060. :banghead
I have tried about 20 different ways of starting the game. Once I was able to actually play the game but then it locked up at the end of the first race.
Can anyone get Lotus Trilogy to work on 060?
I would have thought this to be the best version since it was AGA fixed by the game company themselves using the source code.
This is the Lotus Trilogy that was zoned ages ago.
StrategyGamer
25 November 2007, 22:41
My Lotus Trilogy did not come with CDDA (prob would not have fit in the zone :D) but it does play the mod music.
Graham Humphrey
25 November 2007, 23:05
So did you try the WHDLoad version of Lotus 3 I put in the Zone?
bippym
25 November 2007, 23:11
that's too simple :o
StrategyGamer
25 November 2007, 23:13
Yes I just tried the WHDLoad version. It started up immediately on the first try! :)
but...
It locked up halfway thru the first race! :banghead
So every version I have tried, in every way, with every option, the game randomly locks up.
But I am not a WHDLoad expert so maybe there is some option I am supposed to set?
Is there a WorkRelaibly tooltype?
Or a DoNotLockUp tooltype?
Or how about IrritateTheGamer=NO ?
I have an A1200 with Apollo 50Mhz 060, 32MB RAM, 4GB HD, FFS, Samba network to PC, Mediator with a ethernet card.
Graham Humphrey
25 November 2007, 23:18
You could try the 'nocache' tooltype... otherwise you'll have to ask in the WHDLoad sub-forum I guess.
StrategyGamer
26 November 2007, 00:25
Ok nocache tooltype seems to have fixed it. I was able to play the game long enough to lose. :D
My score: 202440
I suppose my Lotus Trilogy would have worked if I disabled the caches.
IMHO the soundfx in this game suck.
I remember liking Lotus 2 and Crazy Cars 3 more than Lotus 3. Why did you guys pick this one?
Graham Humphrey
26 November 2007, 00:33
Glad you got it working.... HOWEVER!
1) The round doesn't actually start for another half-hour or so (just under)
2) You need a pic of your score as well
3) It was picked because it got the most votes :D
StrategyGamer
26 November 2007, 00:48
Ok this time I was driving along, my score is 3022930 and the game randomly locked up again! :guru
So it is official, no WHDLoad game has EVER worked on EITHER of my Amigas EVER! GROWL!
All turning off the caches seems to have done is make the lockups happen less frequently.
Graham Humphrey
26 November 2007, 00:52
I'd post your problems in the WHDLoad sub-forum if I were you as WHDLoad obviously doesn't entirely like your setup.
turrican3
26 November 2007, 04:08
why don't you choose the hardest level ? graham

I use BPPC and Lotus 3 does not crash with WHDLoad. NOCACHE tooltype is necessary. Maybe it is the version of the game? I use floppy version not the Trilogy.
why don't you choose the hardest level ? graham
It makes me wonder too.

Too easy? Not for me but then I'm not very good, obviously ;)
And I don't think 10 races is particularly short either, but again - that's only me.
@Bamiga2002: no pic, no entry :D Sorry.
Graham Humphrey
26 November 2007, 18:38
Actually, how 'bout Easy, Medium and Hard, and add up all the scores like turrican3 said? Any objections to that? As far as I can tell everyone will be happy ;)
Or maybe you just want Hard? Please tell me if you want a change.

What car too? I always used to play using the Esprit (think it was the fastest) and IIRC the higher the top speed the more points you can accumulate
The above might be carp but could do with confirming
Graham Humphrey
26 November 2007, 20:21
Is the Esprit the red one? If so that's the only one I use too.
Not sure it makes too much difference really?
Graham Humphrey
26 November 2007, 21:07
Okay well I guess I better sort this out quick - I'm gonna go for all three and all the scores added up. And also you can use whatever car you like. So when posting screenshots PLEASE label them with Easy, Medium or Hard.
You don't have to do all three in one go either, in fact I don't think it's fair everyone HAS to do all of them (because not everyone might have the time to do so) but obviously you will be seriously disadvantaged if you don't so you will be better off doing them all ;)

I had trouble with the ADFs too. I'm just using the WHDLoad version now though and it seems pretty stable.

I used the [o] version on planetemu, and it worked fine this time. Maybe it's something in my config. Where's the CD32 one?
Anyone know why in Lotus 3 you have to choose between SFX and music? Admittedly the SFX in Lotus 2 were mostly horrible, but Lotus 1 sounded good. In fact, the way the SFX would interrupt one of the music tracks briefly was very cool.
Here's an Easy Score: 14,246,960

So the WHDLoad version and the other version are both doing the same thing on A1200.

Cheers for the links. Surprising that a google-hound like myself didn't have them. These adfs have given no probs yet though.
Got wasted on the roadworks race in Medium. Gonna have to practice that. I did capture the RECS code for the race, but just looked on Lemon and under 'cheats' it has all the RECS codes available. Good for practice. A big plus for the design of Lotus 3.

@Graham, Why don't you make the last round more interesting and open up the league table a bit (and get vermillion participating again to secure his No:1 spot)
Give 12-1 points out for best easy, medium and hard scores and best overall scores from all 3 rounds? Would open it up again with the possibilty for others to take the title or would this be bending the rules too much???
Food for thought!!!

Hmm, don't think it's particularly fair to do that at such a late stage to be honest. I think I'll keep it as it is.

So what's the point driving it and what about that too bit generousity?
It was in Lotus 2. Here nothing such happens (just a sample as if you go through Turbo Zone).
I'm pretty sure your given more time if you play as the slower Elan. Play as the Esprit an make a note of how many seconds you have left after the last stage towards your bonus then play in the Elan, A lot easier and your not chasing the checkpoints despite being in a slower car and i'm averaging 25 seconds left at the end of most races.
It makes the turbo zone noise but i quickly glanced at my score and it looked like 100,000 was added???
Anyway a good way to waste a rainy Sunday afternoon:
Easy: 16,549,320
Medium: 14,791,550 (stage 8/10)
Hard: 16,022,860 (stage 11/15)

Oh, now I got it. You get more time to race through the checkpoint! Great, I will give it a try tomorrow. :)

Well I managed to complete all ten tracks this time, there's still room for improvement here though (I only just rolled over the finish line in the last race, for instance).

Finally, a game I had played many a time before.
So how difficult is the easy/medium/hard level compared with playing in 2 player mode? I only ever really played 2 player mode, and I remember the last level being a killer where you had to drive almost perfectly if you wanted to finish 1st.
EDIT: Actually, there may well be a e/m/h for 2 player mode too. Also can't remember which car I used. Wonder what the default difficulty is. Lotus Esprit is good to use if you can avoid hitting other cars and objects, but being faster it is harder to do so.

Graham, I have an idea. There were comments that Vermillion cannot be beaten in this season. I think there is a way to make this round more challenging. Everybody drives Elan because it gives you more points. What if we could have a seperate score tables for each car? In that situation we could have three winners in this round (if the same person wins all the subrounds, he will get 36 points). I think there is not much work to make it happen since everyone posted a picture with a scores and car. What do you think? I think it is not too late to enrich this round with that feature.

05 December 2007, 10:32
Well, again, I think this is a good idea, but to be honest, like I said with CHook/OTT's idea, I don't think it's entirely fair to change the rules so late on. And anyway, it would be a lot more work for me ;)
So I'm going to leave it as it is now, sorry.

No secret. Don't hit anything. ;)
Lotus 1 & 3 were two of my all time favourite games. I used to like racing Mexico (Lotus 1) with perfect laps to push the cars top speed as far as possible. The bottom of the big dip is one of the fastest points in the whole game. Lotus 3 is pretty easy with the Elan. Finished most hard races with about 30 seconds left. Some about 10 seconds. The hardest is always the storm tracks - very tight time limits. Usually only have a couple of seconds left.
I'd have another bash, but I've wiped my HD and upgraded the OS. Haven't re-installed E-UAE yet. :(

Easy on Super Hang-On :)
The AI on Lotus III isn't that great and it's very easy to read the computer cars as they just bounce from either side of the road to the other and they can't over take each other they just jam the brakes on when they get too close and you have to be careful not to get caught up in it. What is annoying is when you go over a blind hill and one is on the other side driving at 2mph and you slam into the back of it then no matter which way you turn to get past, The computer car seems to gain the ability to read your joystick making it very annoying indeed (even more so on a thin stretch of road)

We've now got a little over a week left of this round (and, indeed, the season) and I'm slightly surprised only 7 people have entered so far. There were four people who voted for this game in the poll who haven't taken part (yet). I must admit this does strike me as slightly odd - there's not much point voting for a game when you're not going to play it. Never mind.
(By the way, this isn't a criticism, more of an observation.)

Some new scores :) .. although i really don't EVER want to play Lotus 3 in single player mode again!. 2 players fine, but in single player, just don't find it very stimulating. So this is my ONLY shot on medium & hard. I should retry it on easy to bump my score up an extra couple of thousand to try and come 3rd, but its too painful for me to try . :scream ;)
BTW - I forgot to enter my user name for the high score on easy mode, so its showing up as "Player 1". Sorry about that.

For me the stage 8/10 (roadworks) on medium level is the hardest of all. And I went through the finish line on last stage on medium with no seconds left.
It's a bit strange that it's harder for me to finish the game on medium level than on hard.
