View Full Version : Fred's Top 20 non-Amiga Games
Fred the Fop
07 February 2002, 23:43
Such that we here love the Amiga, it is the main focus of our attention and discussion.
And often, we bring up memories of Atari St, C-64, MSX, Nintendo, etc gaming and computing as well. We love the games that did not need mods or networking to be loved. And so, Trying a new trick, I decided to make a list loosely based on my erstwhile ally Cody Jarret's fine threads here.
There are 2 common criterion for this list.
1. Must be NON Amiga game. Never published on the Amiga.
2. Must be old school, no higher than 16 bit.
Feel free to suggest a game to me in PM, for, unlike my freind Cody, I have decided to pay deference to the tastes of the masses in at least 2 spots on my list. if a game here
was indeed published on the Amiga, let me know, and it shall be purged.
Whore.
Master of Monsters (Enix, 1991)
Sgea Genesis / Megadrive
Ahhh..the joys of shooting "brusts" of energy at an opposing monster. Almost as fulfilling as tying an enemy demon in a "not".
Japan, home of 200% literacy rates and suicide minded kids who score a mere 95 on their Advanced trigonometry class, is well known for translating games into "demi English". Don't ask me why, but they do.
This endearing trait is one of the nuances of Master of Monsters, one such game. This is a turn based game that looks like a fantasy war board game, hexes and all. Even the icons of the monsters are meant to resemble little plastic pieces.
Synopsis- The objective of the game is to choose a master-able to summon monsters and use magic- and use those monsters and magic to battle other masters (either human or computer controlled) until your master is the last one left standing. There are several different types of masters. Ecah with a lean towards the chaos, light or neutral side. The game keeps track of moon and sun phases, the chaos masters and light masters deriving more power during those phases respectively.
Summoners, Darklords, Wizards etc, can summon certain types of monsters. Some monsters, they cannot summon. A Wizard cannot summon an angel, but can summon a minotaur. The reverse is true for a Summoner. Also, magic mp, which is replenished at the end of rounds, can be ajusted to offer challenge. The power to summon is derived from the amount of castles the master occupies. The more castles, the more slots for monsters. Also, a master can only move in his immediate summoning area, so his monsters are the ones that must eventually kill his rival(s).
As for the monsters, there are plenty to choose from. Several kinds of dragon, golems, demons, romans, etc can be created. And, once they reach a certain amount of experience, they morph into very cool super beasts. And some of these super beasts morph into ultra powerful ....ultra beasts. Cut scenes of the battle between monsters add a pedantic touch. Bleh.
These monsters battle to control the castles, which also heal them as they occupy them.
Rounding out these options are elementals, that a master can summon to wreack havoc on monsters. You want to try and guess what the 4 elementals are they sure aren't Sugar, Cinnamon, Garlic and Cilantro;)
There are some inconsistencies in the game, however. Besides the lower grade graphics and spelling errors, computer controlled masters can use only one magic, "Meteor", which is a shower of space rocks, for all you geniuses that did not know that. There are only 2 campaign games. and some really swell monsters, like the Musashi and the Crawfish Man, err, Lobster Man, can only be created by computer controlled masters in campaign games. A trade off, perhaps?
I love this game, otherwise, and it is a total blast with 3 or more players. Little alliances (I always break my alliances to be annoying. I like to annoy people, as some of you may know;))
can be formed, and you can go and make a bowelmovement as your pal takes his turn.
It is very much like a grand Archon, the monsters being similar. The battles, however, are not arcade style but dice-throw based computer controlled fare.
I suggest you downlaod a Genesis emulator and head over to PE 2000 or Edge Emulation and grab the tosec version, as some others floating around on the net are bad dumps.

I PM'ed you yesterday, Fredawhore (TM), why hasn't my suggestion (Combat - Atari 2600) been added:mad
And how about H.E.R.O. for the 2600, Colecovision and Commodore (And Atari) 8 bit computers? (One of my all time favourite games:))

Hey!! A reply!
A reply!! Someone cares! Someone cares! Seems the drawing power of Cody and Amiga games has been smashed!! Oh.
UHHmmmm..Ok, Ian, I'll do some research and put up a review:)
The other people who have not replied are dicks. :sad

Hey, i'd nominate Sonic teh Hedgehog for a spot in thsi list,. It is, IMO, the end-all platform game for any system.... Specially Sonic 2 on the Genesis :)

Who's the good guy? The angel or the bowel movement?
Fred the Fop

Ah, Drake..everyone knows that the bowelmovement is the good guy....don't you know that BM is good..that its our freind?
Why, without BM, we'd all die of perontinitis at a very young age.
Akira, that game was on my list, pray be patient, your request will be granted 'ere long.
Hmmm, Burseg, I'll tell ya...there is only one Master System game on my list. I'll give ya 3 guesses as to which one it is:)

Anybody played Platoon on the C-64? Zzap peed their pants over this game, but if it's anything like the Amiga version, then those guys are on crack. I bought it for the Amiga when it came out and thought it was total garbage. After reading the C-64 review in Zzap, I popped in the game again for a go in WinUAE and it was as shit as I remembered it. Yeesh! Has anyone played this atrocity on the C-64 to see if it merits the praise the 8-bit version received? I would try it, but my PC is so buggered right now that I can't get any C-64 or Amstrad emulator to work without instant crash-a-rama. Dammit!

09 February 2002, 00:04
1. Wonderboy III - The Dragon's Trap
2. Phantasy Star
3. Since Ultima IV can't be here for it's a conversion, I guess it's Space Harrier.
I was about to play platoon with my C64 thanks to eveyone who helped me with t64->wav conversion stuff but my datasette needs to be hmm what do you call it...tweaked with a screwdriver. Only if I had my old cartridge with the necessary software to do this now.

I love the CPC version and David Whittaker's music is superb :)
Best console games:
SNES - Super Ghouls'n'Ghosts
NES - Blue Shadows

You know I could never get into the (S)NES thing, my old skool fav was the Mattel Intellivision, I even had the Mk II model and a shitload of carts. I think I still have them in the basement. Probably next to all my C64/C128 stuff ;)
To me the best console game was, B-17 if I remember correctly for the Intellivision with the speech module. That thing was great, even before the Vic20 and C64 days.
Yes I agree that David Whittiker was a great musician.

I also vote for H.E.R.O. I had it on my Atari2600, and I still play it in a MSX emulator (I mean, the MSX version, of course).
Shatterhand
24 February 2002, 03:39
Hey, H.E.R.O. was also released for MSX ! It's a very cool game indeed.
I know Master of Monsters, and I consider it to be quite shit. Anyway, it's more the kind of game that Fred plays, not my kind (I like action games, like everyone knows). I always had in mind it was a game from Koei, as every shitty strategy game for Mega-Drive seems to be made by Koei (although many people like those boring games)
The Master-System has other cool games besides WonderBoy, Phantasy Star and Ultima IV. But I bet the whore will say Phantasy Star, because it's one of those boring games he likes. :)

@Twistin'Ghost :
Platoon on the c-64 was an awesome game, alas i think that by playing it on Amiga first you will have spoilt this game for youself. the game was one of my personal faves on the c-64 but i think that it was more down to those wicked tunes and cool sound affects and the surprise factor when i got genuienly scared of the vietnamese soldiers that randomly jump out from nowhere that did it! oh and the gameplay is pretty damn hot too! what a game... you have truly missed something there!
Twistin'Ghost
20 March 2002, 14:56
Thanks for the info. I just thought the Amiga version looked shoveled over and the enemies that appeared just seemed calculated and random, diminishing any believability. So there was no fear factor when they appeared (like in, for example, Alien3 which made me jump when the aliens came shooting towards me!)
Amiga Platoon even received a 73 from AP, which is a much higher score than I would expect from them. Perhaps they had fond memories from the C-64 version and those points were romanticized from nostalgic memories?

Can we resume the exciting countdown of console greats, please? It seemed to get to, erm, number 20 and then stop.
Spread knowledge of cartridges that rocked! The people must know! Etcetera!
Hello, everyone.
After at least months of lurking :o , tonight I joined and saw this great thread with which to join the community.
If we're talking console games, can I include the Atari Jaguar?
Depending on what you see, read or hear, it had 16/32/64-bit processing.
Whatever the case, it did (like our beloved Amiga) have a 68000 at its heart (clocked at 13.3Mhz, I think).
So, with that, I'd like to nominate Tempest 2000. I have played (I believe) all versions, except for Nuon (Tempest 3000). From arcade to PlayStation versions, I still go back to the Jaguar.
Here's hoping I don't get banned for mentioning the 'A' word... :nervous
Minuous
09 May 2002, 09:22
Yes, HERO rules!
Ultima IV, Wonderboy, Space Harrier, etc. can't be nominated, as they all came out on the Amiga AFAIK. I haven't actually ever seen or played Amiga Wonderboy but I assume it exists...the other two definitely do. And Atari Jaguar games would also be ineligible.
Combat? is that the same as the Emerson Arcadia 2001 game of the same name? I suspect so.
Drake1009
09 May 2002, 11:07
I would really like to get my hands on an Amiga version of Wonderboy (not the one where you use swords to bash things with), no matter if it had amigaized graphics or the old C64 graphics. As long as the gameplay was in order.

Good thing come to those who wait, my minions, blackcornflake, Twist, Shatterhand, but not yet Combat, Ian. Mwuhahahhaha.
The second installment finally!
At this rate, I'll cover Combat when Ian and I are in nursing homes :laugh
We can sew tea potties and play checkers and have wheelchair races, Ian. Think about it...you'd have to move to the U.S, tho. I hear the U.K's National Health service is a mess. So here in the U.S, our insurance companies can charge us pensioners $5,ooo.oo
a week to be treated like garbage, robbed, insulted, subjected to Fish and Chip puree', etc.
Ok on with my review.
Shark Shark!! (Mattel, 1982)
Mattel Intellivision
Ah, the simplicity of this gem. Long ago, my brother and I wondered...did the guy who made the fish sounds on this game smoke 2 bags a boom at the recording studio?
Are the strange wailings and bleeps messages to Charlie the Tuna? Which Python was taller, GRahm Chapman or John Cleese?
We spent hour playing this, our second fave Intellivision game. Why? Read on.
Synopsis - The game is simple. A static screen with horribly drawn and animated fish, bubbles and manic lobsters greets you. Your little buddy , the fish is the protaganist. The task is simple: Avoid the mean fish and manic lobsters, and most of all the big, negroid shark. All the while munching on lesser fish for points. Every 1,000 points you grow a bit. Grow enough to finally eat the big shark, and you win! As you progress, you get to eat bigger fish, and your speed and manoueverability improves as well. Almost like a role playing game-experience points.
My diatribes against PC bloatware has sickend some. But look, this game is a mere 15 kb. And its so addictive, so enjoyable. Why is it that today's games come in 3 cd sets?
Aaah...forget the rant.
Go out and buy this rare gem, or do what I did and download the emulator and rom:)

No fecking way Frederic, real men score the biggest fish on the real thing!
I have a cam and I can snap the screen... Much more reliable anyway, since a picture of a screen is less "doctorable" than an emulator screenshot.
Let me finish my work obligations and we'll do a little championship :) Keep in mind though, that I havent played this thing very much, I got the Intelly a month ago.

22 July 2002, 04:13
Its a deal Akira:) What kind is yours? The wood panel one or the Intelly 2? Intellivision is one of the all time greats. Anyone else wanna share Intelly memories, or should I start a thread, ala Retrowhore's MSX?:cool :p
Hmm... I didnt know there was a second version! Mine is the woodgrain+golden details model... Trés retro-cool! :D
Fred the Fop
22 July 2002, 05:33
Man, you even have the voice module and layovers!! I would seriously consider getting this setup, what the heck, I already bought a Saturn:)
Here is a pic of the Intelly 2. It was nowhere near as cool as the ones we have/had. Not much change except for the casing and i think improved side butons. You'll notice how the wood panel buttons tend to stick.
The intelly 1 is so much nicer... thanks for the pic!!!
YEs, I got a very good setup. This is the UK version of the Intelly. A friend of mine from Scotland gave it to for free me because he was not putting it to good use, and he knows I'm a nutter for old systems :)
I couldn't make the speech module work, I think it's fucked :( I have all the inlays and manuals for the 30+ games I have. The manuals are SO cool, great pixel design thingies going on :D
Fred the Fop
22 July 2002, 05:48
You know, Akira, this is one case where the real thing cannot be bothered with emulation. The inlays and 16 point motion cannot be covered in emulation at all. This one is definitely a real thing deal. Opening a window for E bay as we speak:)

The name of this animated series is "PIF & HERCULES" ???
Here in Brazil it was known as "SPIF& HERCULES".... why they added this "S" in "PIF" ?
Anyway, I always enjoyed this series, athoulgh I think I was the only one here to do it . (The same happens with Asterix... I think Brazilians can't cope with french humour or something). It used to air in the afternoon some years ago... now it airs at 5:30 am sometimes.

There was a game for Intellivision(I think) where you flew a WWII flying fortress (think it was a lancaster of some sort), and when there were enemy fighters nerby there was a sampled little voice (you needed a addon adapter to hear it) that said "enemies nine o'clock" etc...
That was really a cool game and I would give alot to play it again

Technically speaking, these two planes were bombers but no they were not the same aircraft ;)
The British made the Lancaster a very fine plane actually and the Americans made the B-17.

I didn't like any overhead racings in Neo-Geo.
I prefer Kof 99 to Kof 97, but Kof 97 rocks too. 98 Is REALLY crap, 96 is average, 94 is average, 95 is very good.
But my fav Neo-Geo game gotta be Last Resort. I just LOVE that game.
Two other excellent games are Shock Troopers and Shock Troopers 2. I recommend both games to everyone, they are excellent games.

Been doing a lot of NeoGeo games this week (in my spare time). Baseball Stars 2 is probably my favorite at the moment, but the Metal Slug games are also nice. Also Neo Drift Out (very Skidmarks-ish), Thrash Rally, Over Top, Street Hoop, Neo Turf Masters Golf, and even Power Spikes 2. Lotsa good stuff on this box, man! Oh, and Stakes Winner is hilarious! I haven't played Bust-A-Move, but Bust-A-Move 2 is an abomination.

I love Neo Geo games. I thought Kof 98 was one of the best in the series, 99 was rubbish, 2000 was pretty good, and so is 2001, apart from some of the character art and the department store muzak.:hoo
I also love the Samurai Showdown games, in particular SS4. All the Metal Slug games are great, but unfortunately the latest (MS4) isn't all that good.
Last Resort, Z-Blade and Pulstar are top fun, as is Thrash Rally and Overtop. Shock Troopers 2 is great as well, along with Magical Drop 3.
There are a few more, but I can't remember them all. I don't like World Heroes, though.

Me too Muzzy. I just played Magician Lord, and to this day I think it is one of the prettiest games ever.

Perhaps "Solaris & Beserk" for the Atari 2600 & the game "Turbo" for the CBS Colecovision ( with the steering wheel ).
These were all games that chewed up all my time :) but then i was kid so i had all the time in the world :)

Now THAT's a good game. Why didn't my parents buy a NES in stead of an Amiga?
