I'm getting the hang of this now. Last question I think!

I've got all the KG game packs installed on the Amiga HD with Classic WB full version as well.

I can run the games fine, but their icons seem not to be right. They look mainly black and white or grayscale. On Classic WB page i see you can have icons with more colours than this with the full version of it.

Whats the best and easy way to boost the colours of the game icons for KG WHD packs in classic WB.

Thanks guys!

Hi zynaps,

go to: http://www.amigagames.com/gameicons.info/

and download all the game icon packages for misc icons.

Or just take the Classic WB AdvSP. http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/advsppics.htm
I´m sure it can handle these icons.

zynaps, all of the icons should look fine, although it depends on the colour depth of your workbench.

If you bump up your colours to 256/128 the newicons will look fine.

I personally only use a 32 colour workbench but I adjusted my pallette so that all of the newicons look ok with a limited palette.

I used some of the tools in ClassicWB to lock my pallette to a set group of colours.

Tools > Scalos > Palette

As KG said, bump up your screenmode colours. The default install is set to 8 colours or 16 if you use Copper backgrounds. More colours = more memory usage however, but you do have the multiboot features listed on the main webpage.

Go to "Prefs/Screenmode" and up that colour depth! Alternatively, Screenmode settings are also under the top right hand menu under "settings->workbench->screenmode".

Those icons viddi linked are OS3.5+ only, so I can't include support as it's still sold - see this thread for details:

http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=32153

Frog has Newicon versions of the icons though, they are compatible:

@ Bloodwych:

Oh, I didn´t know that. (OS 3.5 icons)

But are NewIcons installed / supported in "ClassicWB Full"?
http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/full.htm says there are only normal icons and zynaps only has this version so far.

Yes, they're supported. :) Just like that picture on the right shows in the link you've posted - the one with the copper background.

Only the LITE and Green Amiga Alien Edition don't have Newicon support by default, as those packs are for lower end machines.

several people already ask icons for WHDLoad, perhaps making a sticky thread with both link talked above : AmigaGames Icons (OS 3.5+) + Pygmicons (NewIcons & OS3.5+) could be useful ?

Adding the Scalos locked color stuff could also be an idea.

just a suggestion...

Those links should be in the FAQ wiki I guess, if someone feels like adding them.

I've added a link to a sticky in the ClassicWB forum to the NewIcon Pygmicons. :)

You also have the option of creating your own Icons using images from the HOL, internet or your own snapshots from games/demos by using the tool "Image->Icon", found under the popup menu "Icons" option. Once loaded, simply drag your pictures over to the mounted Workbench appicon and they will be made into NewIcons, ready for use with your favourite titles!

Yes, I would like a small explanation: in what exact format and resolution my pictures need to be in order for image2icon to work and create me an icon? When I try to use pictures from HOL i do not produce usable icons...

Usable icons in what sense? Are you getting an icon at all, or perhaps an icon that isn't proportioned correctly? HOL has two screenshot images stuck together, so you would have to split it in half first before dragging over a single screen shot to Image2Icon. If not, you'd be left with a lot of wasted space top and bottom.

I read in another thread that you replaced standard ClassicWB files, like the icon library, setpatch etc in order to get 3.5+ icons working.

Image2Icon doesn't work with the newer 3.5+ libs, so that may be your problem right there. Also Scalos corrupts icons when you are using 3.5+ libraries and try to save icon info (eg tooltypes), so if you want 3.5+ icon support I suggest you get rid of the 3.0/3.1 ClassicWB and start using 3.5+.

You are just the man I wanted to answer this thread:D...

All right, in order to understand my situation, here is a brief explanation: I wanted to create a system with installed games and pretty icons. It must be based on 3.1 Workbench because quite a few games are incompatible with OS 3.9. So, I have two solutions:

1. I either force my OS 3.1 to display glow icons, or
2. I create new icons for the games I need.

Either one of these solutions will work for me. My problem with image2icon program is that it creates sort of crossed tools icon, and not the picture it was intended to create. So, now I will try to replace back original libs, just to see what happens:).

If you watch this video:

http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/features.htm

at -6.15 on the timer, it shows Image2Icon in action. That's exactly how it works on the default ClassicWB packs. Those picture files being dragged over are HOL images (that have been split to separate the two screenshots they sometimes contain) in their original PNG format.

The screenmode of that Workbench was 256 colours at the time, although the icons still look good in 64 colour mode as long as too many are not shown at once.

By using the old but well proven technique called "put the old libs to their rightful places and use appropriate Workbench" I have managed to make Image2Icon work:):):). Therefore, my problem is solved, I now have all necessary icons I need. Thanks everyone for their time and efforts.

I'm pleased you've got it sorted! :)

Thanks for giving the ClassicWB a go by the way. I'll be releasing some new packs around xmas time and they will have some great new features. :)
