View Full Version : New to WHDLoad - need more memory?

It's been some years since I was into my Amiga gaming and since I recently picked up an old 1200 I figured I'd try it with a hard drive etc.
Got everything installed, including WHDLoad but the first game I tried, Pinball Dreams, isn't having any of it. I get as far as the RAWDIC part before I run out of memory. Is there any way of configuring this to help conserve memory (my 1200 is unexpanded) or am I going to have to upgrade the ram in it before I'm going to get anywhere?
Sorry for the obvious question but I can remember very little of my Amiga days!

You should have at least 4mb fastram if you're fiddling with WHDLoad because everything is preloaded in memory before a game starts.

Unless you don't use the Preload tooltype... ;)

I have an Amiga 600 with 2mb ram, and getting a CF hard disk. So from what I understand, I cannot play games such as Cruise for a Corpse, Indiana Jones etc because these games are 5+ disks, and therefore require 4.4mb?
Or is this wrong.

Depends how the game was installed. If it was stored as disk images, chances are you won't be able to play it as it will have to preload an 880K image.
However, if the game has been installed as files and you remove the PRELOAD tooltype from the icon, there is a chance that some of them will work, because it will only load the files it needs when it needs them, as opposed to loading the whole game into RAM.

If you do a search on here for 'KG' 'WHDLOAD PACKS" or words to that effect, you will be able to get Pinball Dreams preinstalled.
If you also remove the PRELOAD tooltype from the Pinball Dreams Icon, it 'should' be able to work on your machine, as he memory requirements for Pinball Dreams shouldn't be too excessive.

I'm getting the games from these WHDload packs, are these usually installed as 880k images?

They'll be installed however the author of the install chose to write it.
If you goto www.whdload.de, invariably the author states there what method they used.

@Vikingex
I think the majority of adventure games (like the ones you mention) are installed using files so you may be okay.

I tried to use WHDLOAD on an unexpanded A1200 and it was an exercise in futility. Some games worked, but most failed with a memory or other error. I think you need some fast RAM and preferably and MMU for it to work it's magic.

MMU isn't essential, extra ram and a hard drive is the key.
