What do you guys think to an intercative (of sorts) Magazine DVD giving reviews, walkthroughs, Advice, tips and more with regards to Amiga's, gaming and EAB etc :)

Okay after a quick IRC brainstorm with Zetr0, Graham and THB here is what we have come up with so-far

Reviews with multi-sound tracks (review, mixed and game audio)
Longplays (Basically a walkthru)
Speedruns (Quickest Way to End
Cheats
Hardware Tutorials/Projects
Software Tutorials/Projects
User submissions
Interviews (where possible)
EAB Info
Galleries (Users systems)
Standard DVD Menu structure, and also a HTML menu system for use on PC's
Demo of the month (or quarter) or maybe a top 5 for that issue :D
Game compo screenshots and results :)
An interactive game
Easter eggs :p

I wonder if the APoV team would like to compile some info themselves on DVD or do a DVD special... Man this is an awesome IDEA :)

I wonder who'd be interested

Given how long issue 3 is taking, we'd still be waiting for that this time next century :D

I'd definitely be up for writing for some sort of DVD Amiga mag type thing, it's a great idea.

We need contributers and a couple of GFX artists to work on the menu's and look/feel of the whole thing..

Will also need someone to build the HTML/DB side in conjunction with me doing the DVD side of it.

I like the look, its very professional looking and certainly a look and format that would work in part for this project my friend.

However it doesn`t have that DVD part, that I think really would GIVE that EDGE. you know think of a 30's somthing, got his PS2 / PS3 but reminices the days of yorn. not anymore he can pop in a DVD and enjoy flavours of retro moments past, new ideas, scenes and communities, demos and even games leauge action.

my friends, theres a lot more than just games that will fill this project.

imagine for a moment, browsing on a 42" plasma a cool mod with pictorials or watching how THAT LEVEL was done... lots more.

and we wont need to beg for donations as the linkie does... after all its for the community, by the community!

This is an awesome idea, you should show previews of upcoming games too.

There was a show I used to love watching on weekends when I was younger, it was called The Zone, and was an Australian show about video games. They'd review new games and hardware, offer tips, hunts, and all that. The guys were on the screen as well, which I think would really help if anyone out there isn't camera shy. Maybe even filming an Amiga graphic artist or musician or someone, they can talk about how they make their work, show the tools they use, film the screen as they use their Amiga and stuff.

If anyone can submit stuff for approval to go on the DVD, I'm sure a lot of people out there have something they'd like to offer, be it film, an animation they made on the Amiga, a scene demo, a game walkthrough or whatever.

The one thing I really must stress, can someone make subtitles for all the speech in the DVD so hearing impaired and deaf people can watch it too? This also might help for non-English speaking people if someone wants to translate, as I'm sure there are a lot of European Amiga users out there who'd love this too, not to mention my deaf girlfriend who told me about this in the first place.

Here's a YouTube video I found of "The Zone" to give you an example for some ideas. I don't know if the video is any good yet, I'm on dialup and it won't be finished loading for a while.

Hey - don't bite my style! ;)

In all seriousness, I think this is a very interesting idea. However, don't underestimate the amount of work this DVD project will involve. As editor and writer for RGCD I spend at least 15+ hours a week working on the mag, most of which is taken up by dull editor-admin tasks such as emailing developers, arranging interviews, updating the website and cutting and pasting loads of HTML, sorting graphics and all that crap. Writing articles/content actually only makes up about 25% of the work that goes into each issue.

The fact that the RGCD team is now growing larger every month (over ten people now) doesn't actually help to cut down the time I put in - it just means more admin and chasing articles up! It takes a LOT of dedication to get something like this off the ground, and even more to keep it going. So be prepared for that.

From my experience, when starting a project like this up there are always loads of people wanting to help at the outset - it sound like a fun project and people will jump on the bandwagon for the kudos. However, when it actually comes to doing work, the emails dry up... Potential contributors often bite off more than they can chew, and instead of letting me know that real life has got in the way, they just disappear - leaving me waiting for articles that will (usually) never be submitted, and as a result I'm unable to pass the assignment on to anyone else. This can be really frustrating for the editor/leader of the project, as you can imagine!

RGCD #03 is due for release at Retro North in late august (www.retronorth.co.uk), so hopefully I'll see some of you there. If anyone has any Amiga projects they want featured in the mag let me know - likewise, when your DVD is ready drop me a mail so I can promote it through RGCD - we're getting a LOT of hits nowadays (100's of GB of traffic), so it should help promote your work.

Oh, and I don't particularly appreciate the comments about 'begging' for donations. Considering that I mail out physical (professionally printed and presented) CD copies to everyone whose work is featured in each issue for free (40+ posted worldwide), and I had to pay a developer for the initial HTML templates *and* of course there's the monthly webspace hosting fee, don't imagine for one second that I'm actually making any money out of this. In fact, the donation button was only added because people were emailing me asking if they could financially contribute.

Anyway, I wish you all the best of luck with this - and please let me know when it's out!

I'd love to contribute to this Amiga Magazine DVD. I'd love to do reviews but since I'm deaf and I'm not sure whether this DVD will be fully voiced or there will be scrolling text for the reviews and other written things.

Okay..i've been a busy bunny..and fun this..being an introductory to the work I do, I've created what could be used as a front end for this DVD-zine project..if resurrected by the members here, so I hope I've given you a shot in the arm to get off your butts and get serious about this again, I think some of the idea for this project are great, but some are a little ambitious and in reality even 20th Fox couldn't pull it off, even on blueray :)

so what you are about to see, is an idea for the project and hopefully some direction, I've when for the ambient low-key style,as I'm sick of seeing flash this, and flash that, the Amiga was and is a claim machine, so no need for silly colour rolls ;)

I've uploaded the video to you-tube for all to see, and if you have time, please check out my channel, it has some nice stuff up there, and yes..I do love Atari too, so please don't flame for it...enjoy this W.I.P. and all feedback is welcome

thanx for your feedback ZetrO, I have all animations here at pal 4:3 standard for DVD authoring if everyone is happy with what I'v created so far, but I would need to create Background animations for the sections of the DVD-zine sub menu, Magazine reviews, Demo scene section, Coders Area or what section would be present.

regarding my idea for the DVD-zine, if users here when reviewing a game or whatever, have them as static Images on the DVD with the option to goto the next page etc. and also include game-play video maybe boxed in on the last page of the review, I could create a plate graphic with place holders for screen shots and an area for there text insertion, sorta like the Euro-chart disc-zine, I feel that would be more in tune with us Amigians

I'll make a mock-up for a game review and post it here. it will give the Idea for a dvd-zine review, I can't see this project being too difficult to make, the long part is writing the reviews, spell-checking etc..so you'll all need a review editor to carry out this task.

This project hit a stalemate long ago. There are too many reasons to explain. I would love to have the time to work on this, but unfortunately I don't.

If there is enough interest, and enough members to make it viable, then I'd love to attempt to make a good go of it..

I can give you a couple of hours dedicated a week, what do you need?

Greyfox
17 August 2010, 12:23
well..I'm game!...I think what is needed is the articles listings first..as I can create gfx around those, a final low down of what actually going to be listed on the DVD, so I can create background plates for them, will the DVD be dual-layered, single layered etc...and who's going to take up the DVD authoring aspect, allot work in that alone.

also what time is required for animated backgrounds with music? will there be easter eggs? etc.. as worked in DVD creation, I know what's involved and if members are committed and have articles etc..I can do all the artwork in a very short space of time, resulting really in the DVD authoring , uploading etc...taking the most time..I would to have this before xmas 2010, and I Know it can be done..

Grey.

Greyfox

a quick bump!, I take it this isn't gonna happen? a real shame, I was geared to giving it full swing at getting it produced :(, I may approach the APOV team..see if there interested, rather than doing PDF's , they/we could make it a 6 montly production, allowing video reviews, demo reviews , maybe even a podcast on the DVD too..

as what Silents DK used to say.. "when Words are not enough!"

Just spotted this thread...

Greyfox, you are one talented individual. There's some amazing stuff there.

I'd be interested in helping get this off the ground. I don't have masses of time, but am willing to contribute in some way, shape or form.

I would suggest that rather than quarterly releases we go for every 6 months. That's more than enough work!

Just a thought for one nice piece of content to go in issue one - I have kicking around on my Mac at home a really lovely Wizball/Amiga commemoration animation (you guys probably know what the name of this is). The author says that he's produced a higher quality version of it. Perhaps we could see if the author is willing to let us make it available? It'd certainly be ideal content for the DVD.

Other content - See if we can get a high quality version of that last day at the commodore factory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRI7hHwiRxk) and as well as that, get an interview with the guy who filmed it.

Just a few suggestions.

I really appreciate your Interest Robert and thanks for your nice comments :) , but I don't think anyone here has the time ,as there is allot of work to produce this , I was willing to commit, but I can't handle everything on my own, would need at least 10+ members doing stuff..I work in digital imagery and video, but the amount of DVD authoring etc.. reviews, video reviews require 100% dedication , I just don't have..but a Proof reader would be required to proof read the reviews, spelling, grammer etc.. and then a person who know and is able to professional dvd authoring to put it all together, no problems doing the graphics, intro etc.. but it's a terrible shame this has had it's back turned on..I guess the other thing to look forward too is the VIVA Amiga project : http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=55322

hopefully this will motivate members or persons into doing something professional for the amiga scene, I for one lie in wait for that day :)

m8, this by the looks of it has been canned, due to the amount of work involved and time and effort required by members here, who just don't have the time, I for one would of loved this as I'm sure many others..but alas it's not to be...:(
