View Full Version : Rocket ranger code wheel won't work

I've been running Rocket Ranger in the latest version of WinUAE using config ecs13 as recommended by bttr. I've got the code wheel but whenever I enter the amount of lunarium fuel I end up crashing in the sea. I know the code wheel is ok because it works with the slightly inferior ST version. Can anyone help? thanks, paul

The even more slightly inferior NES version does not need the codewheel.
Getting to your question, I would like you to upload the codewheel, if its scannable and let me try and figure this out. Also, I may have a cracked version of the game. I am not sure. A search thru TOSEC may help discover a cracked version's existence.

I have uploaded my Codewheel into The Zone, it might be different to your's, but you'll never know unless you download it;)

Sorry for the delay in replying, I had sort of given up getting any responses on this. So I missed the chance to download your version of the codewheel. Anyway I've put my version of the Rocket Ranger codewheel in the zone so perhaps you could download it and tell me if it is the same as yours:)
I had no idea there was an NES version of RR, nice screenshot. I've been getting by on the ST version, really all it seems to be missing is that bit where Rocket Ranger runs to get enough speed to takeoff. Unfortunately I've got stuck after getting 3 or 4 rocket parts. Does the Nazi guarding the rocket parts become impossible to beat or have my games-playing reflexes deteriorated that much?

I'll upload my version for you again, it's only some of the codes that are different (From memory) so finding if mine is different from your's would be a thankless task.
My advise, fly somewhere you know your codewheel table is wrong using mine and see if it works:)
Failing that I could upload my version (HD or ADF) of the game for you to use;)

I think it's definitely my version of the game. My game goes wrong straight away when the Barnstorff and his daughter are kidnapped and you have to intercept the Zeppelin over the Atlantic. On both codewheels the correct amount of lunarium for this is 23. However, although Rocket Ranger flies about the right distance on the map, he flies in totally the wrong direction.

I'm pretty sure you have found the problem. Up until last week I had chosen the adf version that was cracked (I guess) with no fancy crack screen at the begining. It loaded fine and played up until you put in the lunarium. Then it took you to towards South America and you crashed.
I went hunting and found another version, this time cracked by another group. It worked. There are two or three types available. One even has a code wheel program you can access during play, but it shifts the screen to the left a bit.
If you want my working version let me know and I'll put it in the zone...

that sounds exactly like the problem I've got. If you could put a working version in the zone I would really appreciate it, although not the version where the screen is bit to the left. Thanx

I remeber a time back I found this version here and played it quite a long time without any problem (but you need the codewheel anyway) : http://www.1024mal768.amiga-island.de/Abracadabra/Addams_Family/Barbarian/Cabal/D_Generation_AGA/rocket_ranger.html
Just try it ;)

Thanks Retro, I'll check that version out, too. Getting the perfect adf is an eternal quest.
I also put my working version in the zone. It's not the one with the active codewheel that shifts to the left, it's another cracked version that seems to run perfectly.
You can also get the original manual at www.back2roots.org. It has the codes at the bottom.
Please if anyone has the box scan it would complete my file on this game...:)

Annnndddd...if you're just a downright completist, Rocket Ranger was released in the UK by MirrorSoft and then later by their budget label, Mirror Image.

And while not Rocket Ranger, I think you'll probably want this image...well, just because! :D

Amiga version features nazis and NES version, aliens. I'm not surprised. That's usual nintendo censoring.

WOW!
You deliver quicker than Domino's Pizza!
I've looked all over for for that scan. You even gave me the back of it!
With the manual, the box scan and the good adf I can pack this gem away for good. It's obviously one of my favorite games. And so...

And no Rocket Ranger journey is complete without a look at Cinemaware (http://www.cinemaware.com)'s page for the game:

The GFX look pretty impressive to me, let's hope they don't fudge up the gameplay too much;)
I can't wait:cheese

At last 12 years late I think I've just completed Rocket Ranger, although I have to admit I did cheat slightly. The Amiga version Retro recommended works ok but the state save in WinUAE didn't work so I used the ST version in Steem which meant I could save at any point.
Here's the problem, I've shot the last Amazon slave on the moon and I get the congratulations message then, and no laughing please, this blue bug thing suddenly bursts through the message and spits some green goo at me. The game then cuts to the standard message you get when the nazis take over the White House. I can't believe this is the authentic ending but rather a change by the crew that cracked it.
The cracked version I'm using is the Automation CD 184. Now I know some of you are probably thinking that this serves me right for cheating but does anyone know where I could get another ST verion of Rocket Ranger so I can see the real ending?

In a word ...... NO:p
What exactly doesn't work with WinUAE's save state function??
I have used it a fair bit and not had any troubles what-so-ever with it, maybe I can help you get it working:)

Hmm, there is a way :) Just get the original for ST at EBay and read out the discs at your PC, then you got the non-cracked version + codewheel for use in you Atari Emu :D

:nervous I'm using WinUAE 0.8.17 release 3, which version have u got Ian? Or it could be because you're using a different version of Rocket Ranger. Basically what happens is that when I try to restore a saved state the game seems to load ok but then instantly freezes. Any ideas? Anyway I'll keep looking for another ST version.

I haven't really played around with save states much myself, but I have heard one quirk in how they work that could be biting you, if you're not aware of it. The way I understand it, you need to go into the gui and load the configuration that you were using when you saved the state of the machine, and then load your saved state. At least some of the settings in your configuration file are not currently being saved in the saved state file. Saved states are still considered somewhat experimental, so I'm sure this will probably change at some point.

Rocket Ranger savestate problem is caused by a bug in savestate code. Fix was included with UAE 0.8.20.

I use the same version of WinUAE, but I don't use the save state feature with RR:)
So I didn't know of this bug that Toni speaks of;)
I mainly use the save state feature with 4D Sports Boxing, just in case I lose a fight:cool
