View Full Version : United Forces Megademo - guru after part 1

The Finns were skilled demo coders in the early days.

Tai-Pan of UFO/Phalanx/Complex was very good indeed, and I'd like to see everything he's coded.

So, with a little help, I uncovered some ancient demos, this is afaik the first and only megademo Tai-Pan coded for.

But Angst! The megademo loads the second part, only to guru with the (in?)famous #00000004.00001970 code after loading to track 43 and decrunching...

This was in the 1.2 days, so I tried that first, and nothing but 512KB Chipmem. When it didn't work I added slowmem and different kickstart combos. If I add slowmem the error address is in the slowmem range.

Is this a bad disk? (If so, does someone have a working copy?) Can you get it to work in your WinUAE? (If so, what version and settings?)

The two disk .adfs are zipped in the Zone, if you guys would like to try it ... A big thanks to anyone who helps me get this working :)

Via pouet I found United Forces webpage!

Unfortunately the link to the LHA files was broken:

Hmm the second disk could be booted separately it said (not common, that!) and the last part was a revelation ;) Maybe it only works on A1000s! In which I must somehow obtain the 64k and 8k bootstrap ROMs. (And a Kickstart disk, I suppose?)

I did try the disks in WinUAE with some different versions (back to 0.8.26) and all guru at this point. The two disks are in TOSEC as United Forces Megademo (19xx)(United Forces)[a].adf (CRC32 8FD4E661) and United Forces Megademo 2 (1989-07-29)(United Forces).adf (CRC32 41BBAFE6). There is also United Forces Megademo (19xx)(United Forces).adf (CRC32 22568CAE). I tried that one and that does work with WinUAE. Don't know if the 8FD4E661 one is bad (it is not marked as one) or if the modifications break WinUAE. You can find the working one here: ftp://ftp.chscene.ch/mirrors/the_scene_archives/The_Scene_Archives_Vol_08/Disks_are_in_Here/Disks_7351_To_7400/7382-United_Forces_MD_1.DMS

Thanks thor! But WinUAE hangs on selecting that image, and xdms reports "track data CRC error" when trying to convert to ADF.

Using a proper FTP client fixed it. Great :) :)

Hmm, investigating further suggests the TaiPan in UFO was not Tai-Pan of Phalanx, later Complex. Not 100% sure though.

Was the first part of this megademo made before Kaktus/Northstars Scrolly part in Northstars Megademo III? Would be nice to know who invented it first :)

I'd say the Scrolly part from Northstars Megademo III was first, as it was released in the end of 1988 while the United Forces Megademo was released in 1989 (don't know when).

Yes the one with CRC 8FD4E661 is, so mark it [ b ].

Guru #00000004.0000C01570 confirmed on real thing (A1000, KS 1.2 AND 1.3) while trying to decrunch second part.

How did you come to this conclusion? :p
Megademo Part II (Disk 2/2) works fine from A to Z with standard A500 config, so I assume it will also work fine on an A500.

That group was mostly german. I don't believe the finnish tai-pan was actually a member of UFO. :)

"The Finns were skilled demo coders in the early days."

I am pretty sure most amiga demos were made by skilled
scandinavians.A demo statistic would be interesting.:)
