Has anyone ever used the CAPS dumping tool and can explain how to configure it on the PC side?

On the PC side? Unless the dumping tool has undergone a remarkable transformation since I last used it, you don't. The dumping tool allows you to dump original Amiga diskettes on the Amiga, and without Amiga hardware, it's useless. It also requires (I believe) that you've got at least an '030, so an older Amiga won't work without an accelerator.

Well there are options to mount pc2amiga using a null modem serial cable or to dump to the amiga hard drive, though the hard drive that's in there isn't working at the moment. Dunno why. The CAPS project people told me that my 1200 should be able to do the job, though it will certainly take about an hour for each diskette. Fun stuff that is:p

I forgot about the ability to dump via serial link, as I always dumped to HD myself. Afraid I can't be of much help in setting up the link. Surely somebody else here has dumped that way though.

As it happens, I just ordered a new 2 gig hard drive from amigakit.com so I will have the ability to dump to hd. Once I dump to the hard drive, how do I get them off of the hard drive and onto my pc?

Ethernet via SAMBA or Amiga Explorer.

Serial via PC2Amiga, Amiga Explorer, TwinXpress etc.

PCMCIA CF card using cfd.lha and fat95.lha from Aminet.

Floppy disk using Disksplit and CrossDos

i think you need more than 2mb ram to dump to hdd too ... thats what stopped me last time round ... that and the parnet/serial cable failing all the time.

got ram expansion, just gotta dig my amy out

Connect the HDD to your PC and use it via WinUAE, if you also add a virtual directory in WinUAE you can copy stuff from HDD to PC-Filesystem within the emulated Amiga.
Only thing needed may be 2,5->3.5 HDD Adapter.

i use tool v3.6, i have a 4gb hard disk drive ! 2mb of RAM is enough, but you need to use PC2amiga via PARALLEL cable !!!! not serial !

Also, you need an old PC to connect your amiga, or a machine with W95/98.

if you don't have these, then more ram is needed because the raw dump is
put in memory before being saved on HD. a normal RAW is ~ 3mb !

See what i mean ?

I keep getting a failed return code every time I try to dump the disk. Can someone give me a word for word guide on how to do it? Because I must be doing something wrong.

i use USB Flash ram (1go but slow on amiga 200ko/s) and an HD formating 4 go formated in FAT32 for amiga/PC exchange (with crossdos)

A 68020 should do the trick. (But I do not even have that ;))

boing_1000
14 September 2006, 03:34
Yeah the tool says minimum of 68020 so I'm fine there.

are you saying NO to the 'does your drive go up to track 83?' question?

also I think you need to have more than 4Meg of FASTRAM to be able to dump to HDD. What are your system specifications please?

dlfrsilver
14 September 2006, 13:10
or that's because you have entered words or sentence in an innapropriate way.

i'll make tonight a video that show how to proceed with CAPS tool.

Apollo 1240 accelerator with 68040 and 32 MB Fast Ram

2 Gig HDD

@dlfrsilver

Thanks! That's just what I need!

It wants me to sign up for an account:( gahh It says I dowloaded it but i cant find it. Where would it have been saved to?

boing_1000

Can you upload it onto the Zone?

If you cannot download this using a "free" account then you suffer from the same shite as I do :sad

Basically my ISP hides my IP address behind transparent Web Cache / Transparent Proxy servers... Only option is to get a "Premium" account which I won't do :scream

dlfrsilver
15 September 2006, 22:09
quite easy, instead of clicking on PREMIUM you click on FREE, then on the next page you choose Cogent server and then write the symbolic asked.

the download then starts. The video is 85 mb.

Odd...it works on my laptop but it wouldnt download on my desktop. Very strange indeed.

Ok please let me know how good you think it is ^^

boing_1000
16 September 2006, 00:01
The only problem is the interlace flicker on the CRT monitor. Other than that it's good.

Actually to make it even better, a really good idea is if you used a video camera with an RCA input like what you'd use to hook it up to the tv, you can record the analog signals put out by the Amiga directly to video. Then all you have to do is voice it over. Know what I'm talking about?

dlfrsilver
16 September 2006, 00:04
yes but i don't have any video camera ^^

So now, are ok for dumping ? did you see which error you were doing ?

boing_1000
16 September 2006, 00:37
I'm at school right now and I don't have access to my Amiga until I get home. Once I get home, I'll test it out using the video as a guide and if it still doesn't work, I'll mail my disks to the SPS people. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

dlfrsilver
18 September 2006, 20:01
so, where did you failed on dumping process ?

boing_1000
19 September 2006, 03:02
After I had entered in all the information about the game.

gizmomelb
19 September 2006, 04:36
ahh so when it tries to save the text file info about the game it's dying?

sounds like your HDD has a filesystem which the CAPS boot tool doesn't know how to communicate with.

What filesystem does your HDD have on it please?

boing_1000
19 September 2006, 06:37
fast file system? i don't remember for sure, but i believe that's it. why, is it supposed to be smart file system?

dlfrsilver
19 September 2006, 08:29
this has nothing to do with this, listen carefully :

- when entering the name of the game, information and so on,
PLEASE only type enter when you have nothing to type, and don't enter
too many things.

i got the same error sometimes because of this..... It must work on your configuration.

boing_1000
19 September 2006, 18:26
Soo if I enter too much information, that could be causing the failed return code?

Belgarath
19 September 2006, 18:28
unless things have radically changed since i last used it, you can skip all the info apart from the name and then edit the file and fill in the information with a text editor afterwards.

boing_1000
19 September 2006, 19:00
Ok I'll try that, I wish I was home right now so I could.
