This thread suits perfectly for a question I have..
On the C64 I know 3 versions of Afterburner exist:
- Afterburner European edition: This is the version by Activision in 1988;
- Afterburner American edition: Far superior full-screen version by a company I do not know;
- G-loc aka Afterburner2: A rubbish sequel released in 1992 by US Gold.

On the Amiga I am not sure about how many versions there are. I only know these games:
- Afterburner;
- G-loc aka Afterburner2.
But on the site of Malc-ale I read an Amiga review of Afterburner 2 (http://ale.emuunlim.com/reviews/afterburner-2.shtml) with screenshots I did not recognise. Is this an American version or really a sequel?

This is Amiga Afterburner 1. It's not a very good conversion.

This is the arcade Afterburner 1:

This is the arcade Afterburner 2. The Amiga version is more like this than Afterburner 1 was.

The Afterburner 2 titlescreen on the Amiga suggests that it is Afterburner 1, but if you wait for a while in Afterburner 2 you will see this:

Cody,
Thanks to your quick reply you have solved a question which caused me sleepless nights. :)

Until today I never knew a Afterburner 2 existed on the Amiga let alone in the Arcades. I do not know how this game slipped by; I have never seen it in magazines and never got a (cracked) copy of it. I think this could be a typical 'America-only' release.
The game really looks incredible compared to the original which I also liked. Is the 3-D scrolling in 2 convincing? The review at Malc-Ale was raving about this game.

Hmm, as I surfed around a bit, I think Afterburner 2 is a common game on the net, isnīt it :confused

Retroman,
When I talk about cracks I refer to the availability of these games in the days I was an active real-Amiga user (1991-1995). I regularly visited a copy-party in Venlo, The Netherlands where I also copied older Amiga games. I had never seen a copy Afterburner2 before.

When I look at Amiga emulation, it is a struggle to emulate games properly on my Pentium 90 (with no Internet and broken A-drive) so I do not care about collecting ADFs. However, this will start to change when I have a new (fast!) PC.

I do not care about collecting ADFs

My respect for you Tim has boosted 500%. Reason : Your main reason for being here is the conversation :)

When you do get into ADF collecting, my respect for you will still stay high, so don't worry (but why would you worry about what I think!?!? :confused) ;)

MAN, I had no clue Afterburner 2 was that good. I have at home that Afterburner 1 thing and I thought it was well shoddy... Sheesh, I need to download this one now!! It looks as good as the GEnesis version :)

I just hope it plays as well (ie fast :P)

Although Afterburner 2 may look superb on the Amiga, I actually don't think it plays very well at all. Like a number of other games it seems to play by it's own accord, with frantic joystick moving to avoid enemies totally random as to whether or not you will survive an attack wave. There are also far too few animation frames in that banking from level to fully right has about 2 frames of animation.

Having said that it is quite fun to play (in an uncontrollable kind of way) and the original Activision game was garbage so it is better than that version at least. And for 1989 it was a great attempt.

Activison fucked up all computer versions of Afterburner...
Although I indeed knew about Afterburner 2 for Amiga, I have never played it too..

About what Codetapper said..

Are you talking just about the Amiga version, or are you talking about Afterburner in a whole? If it's so, you must see me playing the PC-Engine version (The best home version IMO) , and see that's is not all about luck :)

Afterburner needs a LOT of skill to be played, you just have to learn how to play it properly

Well, it's all in the barrel roll, me mate :)

Am I the only one who lieks the PCE version more than the genesis one? Brilliant litle game. I assume Shatterhand is with me on this one :)

Yeah Akira, I am with you, as I said above :)

It's not all in the barrel roll, I rarely use it, as it makes me feel dizzy (just kidding, it actually makes me feel lost, and when I see, a missile is right on my face)

It's better to fire missiles in the enemies planes before they shoot their missiles, and after they do it, dodge them.

And when a plan comes from behind, just get away from his aim, put the throttle in the full, and then suddenly slow down your plane and go down. The enemy will pass through you, then you go up and shoot it

And when a missile is in your tail, just hit the Afterburner button, and get ready to dodge the front missiles in a blazing speed :)

Hmmm, I like the Arcade Version most :) Since there is an emulator to play that version, I would prefer it ! Nothing against PCE Version, itīs really good, but it doesnīt reach the playability of the original Arcade Version .....

The arcade version emulated is pish, because you miss either the cockpit cabinet OR the cool rumble controller :)

I use the barrel a lot :)

I only tried Afterburner emulated with FInal Burn, and it's just too damn unplayable. I don't know why, but the game just don't feel right.
