Hello peeps,

I have always wondered how this OS feeled like, but I never got round to get it from anywhere. Now I can barely find any mentions to it on the net!

Does anyone have the pre-release version (or even better, any final or something, if it was ever released) of this OS for the meega?

Thanks in advance,

No final release until now, the problem is, the pre-release is being sold, sometimes also seen on Ebay ...... more info here : http://www.weirdscience.co.uk/products/workbench/pos.shtml

I actually have i on CD, but never checked it...

> Now I can barely find any mentions to it on the net!

That project was canceled nearly four years ago, and there are/were lots of other Operating
Systems developed for the Amiga (PowerOS, Screens, AROS, MorphOS). So I wouldn't expect to find
much info about it...

I've got it on CD, but the whole pOS drawer is 20MB. I have only a 56k modem, so you'll get a
"stripped" version, but still it won't fit the ADF zone. If you really want it, point me to some
upload location...

Uhm, what would be missing in the stripped version ? How big in MB would it be ??

@RetroMan:

> Uhm, what would be missing in the stripped version ? How big in MB would it be ??

Just checked it. A complete install (without the German docs and any developer related stuff like
GNU tools (incl. sources), includes & autodocs and examples sources) is only 4.7 MB.

I'd expect that to be about 3 MB LZX packed.

Problem is, this thing is a preview version that seems to time out after a few months. To make things
worse, it seems to have some sort of Y2k Bug :-/

So whoever wants to have it, will have to fiddle a bit to get it running... I should have a
"illegal" version floating around somewhere too, I'll check if this has th restriction removed.

Well, could you eventually make two .ZIP files out of it ? So it would fit to THE ZONE ;) and you may upload here, since it has been abandoned, it should be no risc to post I think :)

Akira

Yeah I wouldn't mind taking a peek, if I like it I might try and score a copy from eBay

Really strange if Amiga shops still sell this, if it was canned.

It even fitted into *one* LZX file, which I'm uploading at the moment. But I'm unable to get it
running. When starting it, it just complains that "use time is over (1.0.25)", whatever that
means. So you'll have to find out how it checks the date. I already checked System clock and the
datestamp of the pOS files.

Let me know if you're succesful.

> and you may upload here, since it has been abandoned, it should be no risc to post I think :)

Agreed.

Sorry for the late reply guys...

The upload function doesn't work for me - it complains about "missing description" and there's
nothing I can do about that. I saved the upload HTML doc to my HD to check what's the
problem and post a sort of bug report for RCK.

Well, I'm not very familiar with forms, and I'm extremely busy with university stuff at the
moment, so this may take a few more days (simply don't have the motivation atm..).

If somebody still wants to have pOS, send me a private mail with your e-mail addy, I'll mail
it to the first guy contacting me...

Be warned though, this is a time limited demo version, and I was unable to make it believe
it's november 1997 :)

Now that I'm finally able to upload (thanks Akira & RCK), I upped the pOS Preview.
Installations on how to get it up und running are included with the archive.

Please note that the archives are zipped *Amiga* files.

This is the "Developer Archive" (with all developer related stuff stripped) from the
Geek Gadgets CD. It's the final preview version that ever appeared.

I have the a pOS ISO Image, but I cant upload it to the zone until a moderator or someone similarily intellectually endowed can tell me if it still being sold (you never know :rolleyes). Its also 14MB compressed (28mb unpacked).

I'll split it up into small bits and post it if it is indeed 'abandoned'

It's not sold anymore i think. I've searched the net and i hardly find any infos on it. ProDAD doesn't seem to exist anymore. The only source you could ever get it i know about is the geekgadgets2 CD. The geekgadgets.net Site is down for several years now as you can see at archive.org. There are only a few Screenshots on the net and they look very interesting to me, i'd like to see it in action and maybe on a fullcolor screeen, the shots are mostly 8Bit.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

The pre-release can only 8 bit.

Are you sure? I found some bad quality jpg screenshots with an imageviewer showing a picture in HAM-Mode, at least it was not dithered.

Maybe it was the final if there ever was one, never theles im still keen on trying it.

€dit:

can some Admin confirm that it's no longer beeing sold so jason can rehost it plx?

got it :D Thx!

Its a pity they've discontinued the development. I'd prefer it over OS3.9 which is only OS3.1 with some builtin Utilities.

Hi Akira,

I uploaded it to the EAB File Server (
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=43633
) about a year ago into the CD/AmigaCD/App folder.

The filenames are p.OS-PreRelease.rar and p.OS-PreRelease.txt.

Akira
30 January 2012, 01:07
Thank you, sorry I didn't look there, it's been giving me troubles with the login :/

Thorham

Thanks prowler :great

Just one thing for people who try this from their Workbench: It may fail to run from heavily patched systems; I use MCP/FBlit/FText/HappyEnv/NewIcons/SwazInfo/MagicMenu (if I didn't forget anything), and it failed to run. Once I ran it from a clean OS install it worked fine.

Another thing: If you run it straight of the CD, you can get problems when p.OS tries to save something, such as preferences.

Akira
31 January 2012, 10:04
I will try this in my AMiga today :D

How did you get it to run?
The install fails at some point and booting from CD makes a chinme noise then a black screen...Don't know if it will be helpful, but here goes: Boot from a clean OS install with a CD filesystem, mount the CD filesystem and run p.OS directly. If you use IdeFix, just make sure to change scsi.device to atapi.device when p.OS gives you the option to change various devices (comes after the screen mode selection).

Akira
31 January 2012, 21:33
Ah, the CD filesystem probably is the culprit. I am using none. Thanks! I'\ll try.
