View Full Version : Confusion over WHDload kickstarts

I'm a little confused here over some of the kickstart files required for WHDload. In the docs it states you need:
kick33192.A500.RTB
But it doesn't exist in the skick345 package. Only a kick33180.A500.RTB is provided. :confused
Also the kick40068.A4000.RTB
I can't find an A4000 ROM with that version number - only an A1200 ROM. Is there a difference?
Thanks. :)

Well I've always used these ones and never had any problems:
kick34005.a500
kick34005.A500.RTB
kick40068.A1200
kick40068.A1200.RTB
You can use an a4000 one instead of an a1200 one but either will do.
If you are looking for these just let me know and I'll tell you how illegal they are and won't show you where to get them ;)

Thanks KG, those are the ones I use too. :D
I just happened to look over the docs and noticed the other two listed above (the first is a 1.2 kickstart relocation file) and wondered if I was missing something?
kick33180.A500.RTB works fine with kick 1.2. Just rename the file.
The problem is: no install specifically requires 1.2. All have been fixed to work with 1.3
Problems arise from very old games requiring v1.1 (7coG), for which no RTB file is available.

would it require an extraction from a real amiga running 1.1 kickstart or it would be buildable by emulation?

.RTB files are not contained in the ROM data. This small file contains relocation entries so the kickstart image can be loaded at a location different from the one it was assembled for ($FC0000 for kickstart 1, $F80000 for kickstart 3)
Without this precious RTB table (obtained by a mysterious tool, see skick doc, this tool must be very powerful, but relies on heuristic fuzzy matches IMHO and some manual editing), it is not possible to make the kickstart run at an address different from the one hardcoded in it (unless MMU address translation is involved, but I assume that Bert wants to avoid that because
not every amiga has an MMU). Of course in WinUAE it's ok since it maps kickstarts at the expected address.

ok understood. there is no RTB for the 1.1 because this kickstart is not soft-kickable, or at least skick does not support it, so the programmer has not written a rtb for it
You've got it.
The bright side is that WHDLoad patchers are generally able to fix 1.1 specific problems so the game runs on WHDLoad + virtual kickstart 1.3 (and also there are not so many 1.1 -only games)
