I need a dummies guide to making a link with the Amiga & PC with a cable.

I'm thinking about trying to transfer my Amiga stuff through cable, but I only know the basic gist of how it's done, not on how to actually connect it up properly.

I checked the back of my Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1100 printer (the LPT ports exist in printers only, right?) and noticed two ports: the power one (with a switch next to it), and another port which looks more like a flattened rectangular shaped-thing - is it an LPT port? Sorry, but I don't know a thing about printer ports as of now. Are there any important ports in the main computer that I need to use as well?

Next, is there just one type of null-modem cable or are there several different ones?

As you can see, I'd be glad to receive a lot of help on this matter. And I mean a LOT. :rolleyes

If it helps, what I am trying to aim at is to simply connect the two machines together and use AmigaTRANS (www.agnus.org.uk/amigatrans) on the PC to do the transferring. Is there any way to do this easily on a Celeron 450 with 64Mb Ram, Windows 95 OSR2, and aforementioned printer?

Look, right now, at this precise moment, I want instructions that relate to AmigaTRANS, not any other utils (I will try them later). I found a serial modem cable (IBM Compatible PRO Series, DB9 Female/DB25 Male, 1.8 metres) in the house somewhere. Will THIS cable help me out here?

No it won´t help you out :P The serial cable you have to use has some lines crossed, else it would be a modem cable, not a serial link cable ;)

Use that cable and burn your CIAs. Man, it's said everywhere:

NULL-MODEM CABLE, not IBM shenanigans. Go to a local PC surplus shop and ask for a null-modem cable. They will provide.

Marz, CIA are I/O chips of which your A500 has two. I would expand, but I doubt you are interested if you have been using the Amiga for 10-ish years and don't know what CIA's are already (unless you are interested in ports and interrupts and the like...)

Here is an illustration of one from the A600/A1200 models. Ignore the arrow numberings, as they are just pointing to the first and last pins.

Follow this great link (http://www.gamesx.com/hwb/ca_Nullmodem25to25.html) and find out how to build your own nullmodem cable :) That should set up anybody willing to do some DIY (I still dont know why cant you go out and buy a proper cable ;p)

I would personally advise AGAINST building your own cable. Here in NZ you can buy a serial null modem cable for $10 (about $4 US) or a parallel one for $15 ($7 US).

All the mucking around you are doing seems silly when you can get a ready made one and if it doesn't work you can take it back and get your money back.

I would buy a parallel cross-over cable myself and use the great program NetworkPC to connect your Amiga and PC. You get between 25k-40k per second (that is kilobytes not bits) and over a serial link between 2k and 5k (which wasn't reliable for me anyway).

NetworkPC comes on 2 disks, an Amiga one with installer and a PC one. You just start up the PC side, then link to it from your Amiga and suddely on the Amiga side you have pc:a, pc:c, pc:d etc...

I think it requires WB2 so if you don't have that, forget it. You can also image directly to the PC side so should work with just 1Mb memory in your Amiga:

and vice versa:

BTW I am using Serial because it's easy to set up a PPP connection with linux using a null-modem :) My Amiga likes it :)
