I'm no expert but I think it's looking for the installer file in the C directory. I'm sure it'll be on Aminet but if you want I can email you it or post it in Da Zone.

Forgot to mention that most WHDLoad games require some fast ram so there won't many that will run a bog standard 1200.

if you could put it on the zone thatd be nifty

FFS, Installer can be found in the AMINET (wuarchive.wustl.edu/aminet)

Fast Ram is not needed if the PRELOAD option is not used. With this option off you can load a shitload of ECS games

I've uploaded it :) Any problems let me know. I originally downloaded it from BTTR as an ADF file and extracted the contents then compressed again using rar.

About 180 of the WHDload games I have running on a CD32 compilation will run on a bog standard A1200 without fastram. Thats not too bad.

Sorry about that, was getting a bit carried away. I have the CD32-100 comp and there's some classics on there - more than enough to keep a miggy user occupied :)

I'm guessing that it's saying that it's looking but unable to find any extra memory. To be honest I've never used the preload option as I have an extra 32 meg.

As for the prefs file maybe you need to use the "show all files option" and edit it using ED or something.

As for Moonstone you need the registered version of WHDLoad to run it iirc.

Then again those three statements might be absolutely wrong but I'm sure there's more experienced miggy users who will explain.

Akira

Obviously there is no such file, you have to create it. Use "ed". That easy :)

Mozzy

so what do i write in this file that im creating?

ive been reading that page for the last hour.. i do look at docs you know however unbelievable it may seem:eek frankly it confused the fuck out of me whats this /s switcher business can someone just tell me how to stop that damn message from appearing and get things working. Then ill pay pall that geezer some cash and register the damn thing

be paitent and spoon feed me info eh i only got a 1200 yesterday

the cli it specifies is
WHDLoad SuperGame.Slave Preload NTSC QuitKey=69 Custom1=1

now if im getting this the omitting of the preload option will disble preload...however im still getting that error message

SuperGame = moonstone in my case

ok hammering away i got it to go.. guess ive just been doing typos

bizzare tho that EXACTLY the same option lines wont work when attatched to the icon :/

A far easier solution is to download the WHDLoad development archive and copy the s:whdload.prefs file out of there - then you just need to comment out the lines you don't want!

I will suggest to Wepl that he includes it in the normal archive for the next release.

i can only get moonstone and cannonfodder 2 to install and run :/ all the rest have that cant allocate message.. even basejumpers which is one disk and is well bizzare

After boot-up, how much free ram do you have left?

gary
09 October 2003, 02:20
I don't understand why moonstone could work on a standard CD32 but not an A1200 as there is more free RAM after an A1200 bootup about 1.8 meg free, although I don't know your exact configuration.

Things you can try:
1. Boot without a startup-sequence and try running whdload manually. You may have all sorts of weird and wonderful tools that are started up at boot time thich can be nice but can hog valuable memory.
2. This command I found works on most whdload games on a CD32:
whdload game.slave PRELOAD NOVBRMOVE
This is my S:WHDLOAD.PREFS file. It doesn't really do anything to modify memory requirements:
ReadDelay=50
CoreDumpPath=ram:
NoFilter
SplashDelay=0
3. Try a different/newer version of 'whdload' with the game.
4. Unplug extra drives and reduce hard drive buffers as these also use memory.
5. get a program called 'add44k' (or add21k) which changes the default workbench/cli screen depth from 4 colours to 2 colours saving a little more 'chip' memory.

Why don't you try an old game that probably doesn't take up much memory to see if that works. I'm guessing something like Bubble Bobble would be a good place to start but I'm sure others will be able to suggest some more.

to be honest im thinking of putting the comp back on ebay as i thought id be able to do a lot more with a stock machine. as it stands i have 2 working whdloads and a standard install of gunship 2000 aga (which refuses to work on joystick:mad )
however that would render me amigaless

Or you could go the other route, buy a cheap second hand accelerator card with any extra memory (hell even 2Mb fast would mean 95% of WHDLoad games would run) and you'll have a much better machine.

With 8Mb and above you will not know how you lived without it!

Akira

Dude, give it a chance. There's somethng you are doing wrong with it, since with a meg and a half loads of OCS games WILL run.

Gary got 200 games running from CD on a stock CD32!

Now if he can do that then the 1200 is perfect!!

You need to check your WB settings, and you have all the needed files etc..

Also if you are booting to WB then use the ICONS!!

Have a browse around the net and download some ready made installs.. check that the Preload option within the Icon Tooltypes isn't set and you should be fine :D

Theres your problem right there. Unless you can get hold of a fast ram expansion card, BOOT WITHOUT A STARTUP SEQUENCE. ou should have about 1.8 meg free. How big is your hard drive? Maybe the hard drive buffers are chewing up too much memory.

AVAIL ; <- How much memory do you have free?
cd GAMEDIRECTORY
WHDLOAD GAME.SLAVE PRELOAD NOVBRMOVE

Also, you may like to try some of the smaller pre-AGA games first plenty of which will work assuming you don't fill your system with rubbish first. (eg: Buggyboy/Bubblebobble/IK+/StuntCarRacer/Lotus1,2,3/etc..) Forget Workbench it just wastes memory which you desperately need, use the CLI.

To boot without a startup-sequence you will need to hold down both mouse buttons while the system starts up and then select that option from the menu which appears.

Mozzy
10 October 2003, 13:39
yeah i figured that boot without startup for myself and i figured out what should be a working command line

whdload gamename.slave <preload if it worked if not i leave it out>

and i got a 1200 to be able to experience the aga games, if i cant play em i may as well just flog the machine and try and fix my 600.

i was never really attatched to the amiga scene anyway (in the way that i am to the c64) and i only really liked one or 2 games (most being ones i either cant run or have to register whdload for
:rolleyes

Sounds like you need to install the Classic WB Lite (http://download.abime.net/) designed for exactly this kind of situation...........
.........and as for playing AGA games read the text files, specifically the tiips & FAQ, that come along with it. It'll explain how to run AGA games even if you only have 2MB chip.

In Britain, the Speccy was the dominant 8-bit computer.

Well you can always use floppies or the hard drive installable AGA games and CD32 conversions. But in this case the WHDload AGA games usually require some fast ram. I really just don't want people to think a standard A1200 is not useful for playing WHDload games.
Personally my favourite Amiga games were non AGA anyway. The demos were usually better though ;)

I was only having a larf. I had great fun with my Speccy and even more fun with my Amiga. It's just I can't help but laugh when people say "ooh my PS2 is better than the X-Box" or whatever - nothing changes from when I were a lad and I doubt it will. I'm proud of my Amiga - nuff said. :)
