View Full Version : Game Endings

What I really like the most about a game are its endings. After playing a single game for hours the only thing you want is a decent outro and credits screen.
My alltime favourite outro is at the end of MDK 1 for PC. You are presented a black'n'white fifties sci-fi movie which morphes into a videoclip. It has a French female artist singing along with the Hero and his dog. Pity about the low screen resolution, though.
Here is my list of memorable Amiga game-endings:
Hoi: This Dutch game has a short animated end-sequence. Once the hero (a cute little dragon) has finished his quest he finally will meet his blind date; She turns out to be a big, fat hairy momma dragon with a dozen children.
Stardust: The villain in this game is professor Shaumund, a small blue penguin. In the outro Shaumund escapes and flies for eternally through space. The music in the outro is beautiful.
Flood: Quiffy the hero has fought his way through 42 levels of sewers and finally will get to see the light of day. Pity he gets splattered by a passing truck. -How cynical.
Xenon 2: People really cursed the Bitmap Bros for the outro of this game. It is a real anticlimax after playing for many hours. The only thing that happens is that the screen turns black with only a little white spot left in the middle, like you have turned off a TV. Great sense of humour.
What are your favourite game-endings?

My most memorable Amiga game ending was Walker cracked by Fairlight. It showed an ejection pod, and then the game crashed. I guess there is something to be said about originals.

LOL!!!!!!!!
Mine was the ending for Nicky Boum..Nicky fuckin Boum..
in the end, he beats up the main boss..when all of a sudden, 3 freaky little elves appear out of a pink tree and shove...*beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep*

My favourite is "Double Dragon", part I. When the final boss was killed, Billy (or whatever his name was) kissed his girlfriend and everything was great.
All of a sudden, his brother Kain (or whatever his name was) picks up an axe from the ground and cuts of Billys head with a single chop. The girl gets blood all over herself and starts to scream like a maniac. Kain probably thinks something like "Aw man, what did I see in this psycho?" and then he finishes her off.
Kain puts the bloody axe on his shoulder, and walks away into the sunset whistling "Eye of the Tiger". Great ending. Or is it just my version that has this one?

Fave ending: Another World (from Delphine Software).
I was sitting open-mouthed before the screen, tears nearly flowing, when I saw my alien friend carrying the dead hero in his arms and flying away into the distance.. Brilliant stuff.

OH SHIT you SPOILERS! First Tim blews the MDK ending for me, and then Laundromat destroys my illusions, saying that Lester Chaykin is in fact DEAD! I THOUGHT HE FAINTED!!!!!!!!
*SNIFF* *SOB*
Oh well, I loved Agony's ending. My Crystal crack had a nice one, after you finish it, it starts reading the disk, and gurus. Ah yes, bloody brilliant.
Now really, I liked Mr Nutz's ending. It even taught you how to cook some Mr. Nutz cookies or some nonsense like that! :D

I also really liked the Another world ending. I'm not quite sure if he died or if he did indeed just get knocked unconcious. First time I completed it I guessed he was dead, next time I thought he was unconcious.
Speaking of bad endings, I really liked the ending on Tintin : Journey to the moon on the C64 where after you complete the last level it dumps you out of the game with an error message.

Out Of This World 2 : Heart Of The Alien (Only for the Mega CD)
Although. Maybe the guy did die and the sequel is based on his alien friend

About Another World: I always was under the assumption Chaykin was very exhausted, not dead. This remains unclear. Does its 'sequel', Flashback, not feature Lester Chaykin?
Akira:
I am sorry I have spoiled the MDK ending for you but maybe there is some hope: I have a French version of MDK. Once you have completed the game a French outro with a song in French is presented to you. I have discussed with some people on the Internet about MDK whether different game endings exist. There are different game endings but it depends on the language and country where the game is published. I just hope this is not a rumour.

Flashback features Conrad, can't remember the last name. It was hailed as a sequel by many people though it werent. The gameplay was very good though and I quite liked the ending too.

Drake, Flashback is not the sequel to OOTW. At all.. the game system is similar (rotoscoping animation and squat) but both games have nothing to do with each other. The 'real' sequel is the MegaCD game, in which, as far as I remember, was starred only by the alien friend! But it seems I was wrong. Haven't played the game, though.

Hm... Flashback's sequel was the ill-conceived, poorly executed and highly overated Fade to Black (Just a bit of trivia for you).
I played the PC version, and I still have the CD in the stack of el-crappo PC games I bought. I don't think it saw the light of day on the Amiga, though.

Fade to black sux. Its got some of the worst controls I've seen (but I never really gave the game a chance)
You can download the game from www.theunderdogs.org . The link to the game is http://www.theunderdogs.org/downloadfile.php?file=games%2Ff%2Ffadetoblack%2Ffiles%2Ffadetoblack.zip&id=1352
If that doesn't work, just use the search on the site. It's about 30mb

I have bought Fade to Black on budget for PC and actually enjoyed it. In fact, it is along with MDK and Descent one of my favourite games on PC! Yes, the controls are a bit messy but the game grows as you play it for a few hours. The game has a creepy atmosphere with soothing MIDI-music which changes once the action in the game starts to change. I have even completed the game without cheating but I have to admit I saved the game every 2 minutes.
Spoiler alert: The outro of Fade to Black is worth every hour you have spend on it. You and a girl from the resistance finally escape in a pod from an ancient inca-base hidden inside a meteor. Many explosions later the pod joins a starfleet which consists of the remaining members of mankind. They start to search for a planet where they can build a new future. *snif*
Drake1009
16 August 2001, 11:32
I have also bought F2B and also quite enjoyed the game. My problem with it was the controls which were easily adjusted to though, and then some of the bugs (Or puzzles I just never understood) like on the first level you enter a room. You can keep killing those morphs and another one will just appear. I managed to pass this area a couple of times by simply walking in, shooting the present morphs and then that was that. Apart from that I think it's a good game. Has a fairly good story and has decent gameplay though a bit hard for a loser like me.
Akira
16 August 2001, 20:35
Drake, sorry for the confusion :)
Anyway, F2B is an okayish game to me. I have played it quite some time when I first got my PC... But nothing like teh good ole Flashback...
I still have to find out the last name of Conrad on the french version...

I have played Heart Of Alien , a friend of mine had it on the Sega CD
Now, the positions are inverted, you play with the big alien, and Lester helps you
the game is great, if you like Another World, you will certainly like HoA, and it even tells you more about the plot
It seems like the aliens with red eyes (and also Red belts, if you notice in Another World) are dominating that world, and the "poor" people (the aliens without red eyes) start a rebellion, and then they battle. The red eyes win, and all the survivors are arrested (Another World's level 2 ).
You see this all in the intro, the big bird comes from the horizon, and lands in the Buddy alien village, everything is destroyed. While he looks at the village, and clean the wounds in Lester, he has flashbacks about the battle. Then he finds his laser whip and then seeks for a revenge together with Lester. Also, remember that big monster that the aliens shoot in the 1st level of Another World? It's the Buddy's pet !!!!
Unfortunately I never finished that one, and my stupid friend gave away the game. So, I don't know if Lester ever came back to Earth. I wonder why Delphine never released that game for other systems (I think the game could have been easily ported to the Amiga, as the graphics and the engine itself is basically the same as Another World)
LaundroMat
17 August 2001, 11:17
I remember Delphine mostly for their highly original games, even if some of them were a standard genre (Time Travellers for example.)
Have a look at their site now at http://www.delphinesoft.com
Looks as if they made quite a buck with their early day releases, and they differentiated their business quite a lot too. Anyone played some of their more recent games?
[Update: Apparently they don't really recognise their roots :(. In the Games section, under Flashback, there's no mention of the Amiga... Neither for Another World. Amiga is mentioned with Cruise for a Corpse, Operation Stealth and Time Travellers however. Weird.]
CodyJarrett
17 August 2001, 11:49
They don't mention other Delphine games either, like Bio Challenge and Castle Warrior.
Codetapper
17 August 2001, 14:45
I find it disgusting that companies History pages simply decide to forget about their real roots - Delphine were NOTHING without the Amiga, all their good games were done on the Amiga first as far as I know (probably due to the superb base platform of graphics and sound) until they turned to the dark side. As many of you can guess, I don't bother playing PC games, they bore me stupid (same old crap 3d).
System 3 is another company that deserves a big "screw you", they hardly mention the C64 or Amiga. Do these dickheads think sales of their games on Gameboy Colour or PC will decrease because they started out writing kick-arse C64 and Amiga games or something?
I was lucky enough to have the Interpol crack of Flashback (and some nice gentleman translated it into English aswell!) in Xmas 92, about 9 months before the real game was released and thoroughly enjoyed playing it. Obviously the Amiga version was made first and I'm guessing that it played the best too, yet Delphine decides to rewrite history by leaving that information off.
Slightly off topic, I find the best history pages on websites are ones which are not just a release list of games, but ones filled with interesting behind the scenes information that people do not know - the best example being Kaiko's site which explained about how the master of Super Gem'Z was stolen at a show and that stopped the game being published! Much more interesting than being told Flashback came out on the Sega in 1993 *yawn*... I'd love to hear Delphine's side of the story about how Interpol got a final version of the Amiga game so early, or if they even knew (surely they must have - some guys got told off in Amiga Format for sending in level codes and solutions to the pre-released game!)
CodyJarrett
17 August 2001, 15:00
The Kaiko website was done by a fan, but did have some good input from the company.
Perhaps the Interpol crack of Flashback was a French version which came out in France first?

That pisses me off as well, Codetapper. That's why I love Compile's attitude. They have recently got back onto the shooter market, with their new game Zanac x Zanac for the PSX (release in November :)), and in the latest show they attended in Japan, they had booths with old consoles and their old games... they ARE proud of their origins and they show it. That's teh good attitude, most of today's companies forget about what they did. Go to Core's website and see if they have every Amiga release they ever did. I suppose you'll only find Lara Crotch pictures now.
My favourite ending would have to be Monkey Island 2.
An excellent suprise twist and very funny, not like the
usual 'this is just a computer game so who cares?'
attitudes of most games.
Another mention goes to Dynablaster for the excellent
funky ending music by Actionamics (or something like that).

The crack of Flashback by Interpol was a French version. Flashback was released in France first, US Gold had the distribution rights for the UK but the took too long to release it, so Interpol had already converted it to English months before it go released in the UK
Same shit with Prince of Persia, was release by Broderbund in the US 8 months before Domark picked up the distribution rights for the rest of Europe!

Did anyone ever complete ARMOUR GEDDON?
I always wanted to see the end sequence to this game because I used to play it for hours. Sadly I never managed to complete it because it was so hard (in my opinion), but I did see the sequence when you ran out of time. An orbiting cannon fired from space destroys your base. Very flashy for those days graphics. Typical Psygnosis.
My fave end sequence would probably be either FLASHBACK or ANOTHER WORLD. Even though Bitmap bros games were my faves, their end sequences sucked!!

Funny you find Another World and Flashback endings good, as many people hate them, for being so... sad
SPOILER - SPOILER
In Another World, you leave flying in a dragon, half-dead. Everybody thought you would go back to Earth, but you doesn´t ... Pah, Lester will never see his computer again... (I never finished Heart of Alien, maybe in the sequel he finnaly gets back to home)
Flashback
Conrad blows up the alien planet, and runs away in a ship. He can´t trace a route back to Earth, so he will freeze himself or something, and will stay in the space, maybe forever..
Again, in the sequel, Fade to Black, Conrad is alive and kicking. I really wanted to see the intro of that game (I only have the warez version) because I want to know HOW THE HELL CONRAD LEFT THAT SHIP!!!!
Drake1009
13 March 2002, 13:54
Conrad left the ship by drifting through space. But as he said (or close to) nothing can stay lost forever, he was captured by his old enemy the morphs and brought to the penitentary new alcatraz on Earth's moon.
And I really liked the sad music in the ending of Flashback. In fact. *Goes to start MPP with mod file*

Resevoir dogs is a hell out of a movie really
But games are different of movies in this point.. I mean, when watching a movie, all I do is stay sit in front of the screen, while playing a game, I am dodging enemies, shooting, jumping, running and doing all this stuff (Ok, just controlling a joystick, but you know what I mean), so I want to see my role in the story to have a happy ending :)
Drake, thanks for the info on F2B plot :) I still want to get a full version of it... Maybe I'll start to search in PSX pirates, as I've seen some of them here have some really old games, and F2B also was released for PSX (I don't even have a PSX, but hell, like Akira said to me once "Getting the console is easy, hard is to get the good games" :) )

Another world has the best ending for sure, It also helps a lot with the emotional background score.
I found many emotional moments reading the logbook in 'Wings', when ol' SergeantMajor Mikie gets the chop from the Hun, and the Squadron takes to the air to score one for old Mick.:thumbs_up

Speaking of Wings...
Did I really suck at that game? Because I didn't ever seem to be able to survive more than 3 or 4 missions at a time! If my damn machine gun didn't jam up on me in the middle of a dogfight, I'd end up having 3 germans ganging up on me!
Anyone else find that the turnover in the Air Force was really high?

Lemmings was fairly funny, a pic of the dev team plus lemming, with a round of applause.

I don't know- I never had problems with picking my enemies in Wings, because your planes were brown and German planes were...er...red, right?:confused
Drake1009

To me all the planes looked orange, the only way I could tell wether it was a friend or enemy was wether they fired at me or if the head of the pilot turned.
Mad Mark
28 March 2002, 17:56
Hehe :D Seems like im the 'ace' of 'Wings' here, I completed the whole game back in my amiga days, I used to cause havoc engaging the huns in dogfights, in later missions, I even encountered german ace's like Max Immelman and Oswald Bolcke, just like in 'knights of the sky', Aces have their own paint scheme to identify themselves with. In 'Wings', the regular german planes would be red, the ace's white. If you shoot down an ace, the Squadron log would report the clash.
To get a good start in 'Wings' you need to set you skills straight from the very beginning when you create a pilot, place your points to his mech aptitude, this prevents the gun from jamming frequently, It also keeps your plane from stalling, The mech skill is also the one that progresses slowest during game play, so set it high from the beginning, your other skills like 'shooting', 'flying' and 'stamina' will progress much faster.
During dogfights, conserve ammunition, use 'short bursts' when you have not got a proper aim through your sight, later you can fill em with lead, but only after you have a steady sight, don't take to the air all trigger happy, or you will become a' sitting duck' in the air, when your 'twin vickers' jam.
The later dogfight missions, will get pretty 'hairy'!, you'll maybe have a formation of 4 planes against 10-12 Germans + a German ace! Not only that, but the enemy will have the advantage of starting above and behind your formation, giving them a huge advantage, you'll need to make some sharp turns and really dodge them, before you can maneuver up behind them and fill em in.
Bomb runs become more challenging also, as you fly over seas to knock out German U-boats and bomb german factories at the same time as Fokker's try and intercept you.
The actual flying in 'Wings' can be a bit tricky. The player and AI interface is a bit clumsy, you might sight a German Plane from a distant Flying straight east, you make step turn to the left, and before you know it, he's right in front of you "CRASH". These small faults in the game will incur from time to time.
The last mission has you and 'The Red Baron' himself fighting of the last duel. Credits roll with the end to the great war, a background animation of Sopwith camels fly over the trenches to waving Tommie's.
Sounds like some of you had some graphic problems with the game, that or colour blindness :)
You could easily see the difference between your Squads own beige planes from that of the Germans bright red.

Well, I guess I'd also qualify as an "ace" at Wings, since I completed the game years ago on my trusty A500. I did use a rather unorthodox strategy though - a little known technique called "keeping a backup of your pilot data file in case you get your butt killed".
What? You mean EVERYBODY doesn't keep a clone of themselves in cold storage just in case? ;)

I agree, a lot of games these days do lack atmosphere, but the most shocking moment in any game Ive ever seen comes from a relatively new game. The death of Aeris in FFVII was a stroke of genius IMO. Before that I dont think any leading game character had EVER been killed off mid-game. It created a real emotional response and an atmosphere I hadnt seen since the BEAST games. :crying

I did read previews and reviews of FF7, but didn't really much of the storyline, which is why i was very shocked at the death of Aeris too!
I spent ages building up the character, only to lose her to part of the story, i also noticed the way the story presented a bond between Cloud and Aeris.
I was really upset, well sort..... i did get really into FF7, clocked up 125hrs, collected everything in the game, beat every boss and completed it twice for the alt. endings!
The strange thing is it was the first turn based rpg i ever played.

Although I'd been a relative newbie to the RPG genre,(Apart from a few AD&D games on the Amiga),I warmed up to FFVII with a great little RPG called Suikoden. Although it can't compare to FFVII, it did contain a great "atmosphere", & I loved how as you expanded your Army, it changed your castle HQ with Additional characters.
BTW-what was the alternate ending to FFVII? I did play through to see the main ending once, but then decided to go back a little bit & up my skills 7 kill of Emerald, Ruby weapons' & gain Knights of the Round materia. Never did get back to finishing it off again a 2nd time. I read that if you faced Sephiroth at Lvl99 with your characters he became mega-tough to beat!
I did also read that originally, there was a mooted plotline that would've involved resurrecting Aeris later in the game, but that the idea was dropped. But I agree, it was a great game.
Back on-topic,I thought Cruise for a Corpse had a nice ending.
Apparently the Xenon 2 ending was supposed to be a "tribiute" to the old-style TV's where the picture went to a little circle before diassapearing, when you switched it off. Unfortunately most people did not get the joke.

Ok, maybe it's because I don't like RPGs that much (except a few ones), but I still think it's one of the most overrated games ever..
Back into endings, I just remebered the ending of Rolo to the Rescue for Mega-Drive ...
In the game you have to find some pieces of a puzzle, to open secret stages...if you don't find ALL pieces, and finish the game, you get a sad end..
but the end is SOO sad... I mean, the game is SOOO cute , it makes James Pond a hard game, and then it gives you that bad end if you don't do it right... it's so depressing..
Alex Kidd in Miracle World for Master System also had a crap sad ending .... I don't remember right now what it was, it was just a text telling what happened, but it was something very bad, I can remember...

@Darstardly-you don't actually need KOTR materia to complete the game. In fact, from memory my characters were only around LV40-50 when I completed the game. I only went back later once I had some further information & learnt about new level attacks, defeating Emerald & Ruby weapons, gaining the special materia, chocobo breeding etc.
Another old Amiga game that had a lengthy ending was Leisure Suit Larry 2. Though it was only a PC port,it did go for several minutes.
One that dissapointed was Operation Stealth. I expected a slight bit more for a finish considering those annoying arcade sequences! It was okay, but not as polished as Cruise for a Corpse.

What I really wonder:
Has anyone ever seen the ending of 'Wings of Death' ?
When I finished it years ago it tried to load something but then the screen stayed black ( or got a guru or something alike - can't remember exactly )
I think I even read on the Thalion website that they were not sure if the ending works on the original ?

You'd think that the stuff would've been found during bug fixing.

For everyone who loved Another World, make yourself a favour and look at the intro of Heart Of Alien.
You can find the game at the house of the underdogs.

Heart of Alien is at the house of underdogs? I thought Heart of Alien was released only for Sega-CD
if it's a PC version, do as Nyarlathotep said, go to the site, and download it NOW.. it's a fantastic game, and it clears a lot about the story of Another World.
erm.. what was the URL again? :) :)

You can find the ISO of the game (Sega CD) at:

Then download Gens (a sega cd emulator) and play. :)

Wow great. There was a sequel, one which I might actually try. Neato.
I have to say I LOVED the ending to DARKSEED I thought it was superb, (but there again so was the whole game).
Also loved the end to Monkey Island 2 :bounce

Darkseed? Did you have a higher-end Amiga with "Flicker-fixer"? Although the game was interesting to play as a demo,I've never dared play the full version as that game gave me more headaches than the lead character!! The high-res looked nice, but it was too hard on the eyes on a TV!

Maybe a bit off topic. Sorry :(
As you were speaking of Wings:
I was looking through my SNESREN directory with SNES roms and found a beta rom named Wings2 or something. I tried it and it looked and played very much like Amiga-Wings. It seems it never came out on the SNES. But it is in the goodtools romset if anyone is interested. Can be found in IRC or WWW
Strange though that it never was mentioned before. Or maybe it was and I didnt notice the hype back in 1993 or 1994 :)
